An English "ny" (like the British pronunciation of "new") would have an [n] articulated with the tongue on the alveolar ridge, followed by j. Whereas an [ɲ] would have the tongue on the soft palate, slightly further back in the mouth. They do sound very similar to my ear, too, admittedly. Native Anglophone and whatnot.
