Hi, everyone! As you know, the Battle of Five Armies is premiering in a little less than three weeks. Every year in Boston, there's a staffer from theonering.net who hosts a line party for the midnight showing of the Hobbit movies. This year, that means a movie marathon at the Boston Common starting at 12:30pm on December 15th.
The TORN staffer originally in charge of the line party has recently moved to the west coast. This means, that the person currently in charge of the logistics for the Hobbit line party in Boston...is me. Scary, I know.
Now, for the bad news. I just started a new job and most likely will only be able to make it to the Battle of Five Armies, not the whole marathon, as I do not have enough time saved up for this. (I could pretend to be sick, I suppose...). So, I could really use an all-hands-on-deck approach to getting this show on the road. Any Boston PPCers feel like pitching in? Your help will be greatly appreciated!
Araeph
By some miracle, I actually have the 15th and 16th off, so if I can find an early overnight flight from Arizona, I should be able to make it in time for the start of the marathon.
Now, to be honest, I've never done a plane flight alone before, so I'm over my head and nervous and trying to piece this together as I go. I have a few questions:
Is the Boston Common within walking distance of any airports? 'Cause I'd rather not spend money on a rental car if I don't have to. Alternately, if there are any local PPCers would be willing to pick me up at an airport (and drop me off again eventually, I guess), that would be fantastically appreciated!
Second, would anyone be willing to put up with me staying at their place for the night of the 15th? Again, money is tight, so I don't want to do a hotel. I realize that, not having actually met before, folks may not want to invite me into their home (I could be a vampire, after all), so I'll understand if no one is comfortable doing that. I just need to know if I should book an overnight flight for my return trip.
Also, um. I'm willing to help anyway I can, but what exactly will we be doing? I've never heard of a line party before, and my people skills aren't . . . very developed. So what's the general plan for the event?
OK, so I asked the members of One White Tree if they would be going to the marathon, and it turns out the majority of them would rather attend the movie at 7:00pm on Opening Tuesday instead of Marathon Monday. That would be Tuesday, December 16th, at 7:00 pm Eastern time.
The Boston Common is two stop on the Red Line subway up from South Station, which has a shuttle bus (complete with luggage racks) directly to and from Logan airport. I don't have a car, unfortunately. :( I also have a roommate who would most likely not be OK with a third guest.
Mostly we'll be standing around (in or out of costume) talking about our love for the Hobbit and LOTR. I've never hosted a line party, either, so it should be interesting. There will be LOTR trivia and prizes, however!
That would be Tuesday night instead of the Monday marathon, or in addition to it?
And how long before and after the movie on Tuesday do you want me there?
I'm sorry to keep pestering you for details, but I've never traveled alone before, and I'm being rather neurotic.
With luck, I'll be at the line party around 5:30 pm. I have to finalize things with my sister, though, because I'm taking her to see it, too. If the movie starts at 7:00, that puts us at around 10:00 for the movie's ending. I'll have to see what Sis feels like doing after that. Fortunately, the T (subway) doesn't shut down until 12:30 or later, so if you're renting a hotel room, you'd have plenty of time to get back.
I'll be arriving in Boston around 3:00 Tuesday. That should allow me plenty of time to reach the Boston Common, barring any disas Wow, I almost finished typing that phrase. I should really know better by now.
Anyway, I'll be wearing a sunflower of some sort on my person, so hopefully you'll be able to pick me out easily once you arrive.
I embedded my email into this post if you need it. :) Have no idea what I'll be wearing yet, though.

I don't know if you'll even see this, but is it the IMAX theater? I'm here in a grey ski jacket with a sunflower figure.
I should arrive at the theater in a hour or so.

Same side of the street as the theater?

In theater 2. Try to catch you on the way out.
I mean, I could see what I can do considering that I have only one actual sit-down final (everything else is essays/take-home finals), but yeah, this is hardly the best time for me to go running into Boston. Do you have any sort of schedule? Or anything I can do to set up the weekend before? Because I'd love to help and do the entire marathon but I have school to worry about (that and I'm flying back to Cali on the 17th, so yeah)
I don't think we have anything planned for the weekend before, and it might be too much to ask people to attend two events so close together, but I'll let you know if anything comes up!
... cool! You're going up in the world - or is that down, since it involves more responsibilities? It's a bit of a shame for the person who would normally be doing it - do you know if they're planning to pull the same thing on the West Coast?
And... hey, how does it feel to be in charge of what's probably the last ever Middle-earth line party (unless they make my movies, of course)? Excited? Worried?
And - which of the movies are you marathoning? On that last thread Lily reckoned on 20 hours for all six EEs (which obviously isn't even possible yet), but 11 hours seems like overkill for just the two Hobbit films.
Not that I've ever been to a midnight release party, you understand, nor am ever likely to; so I have no idea how they work. So... hey, good luck!
