First thing's first - I absolutely adore my paternal grandmother. Many times she has proven herself to be the greatest human being in the world; whether it's supplying us with delicious food when we're to lazy to cook, or supporting me when I was going through some pretty heavy issues, I always had this spritely 4'11 woman to be there with me.

She has surprised me many times, as well. One of the more controversial topics in Poland is if marijuana should be legal, and most of the elderly are of course against it (there's also politics and the Church trying to influence the government, but that's a storm for another time); it surprised me to hear that Gran is for the personal usage of cannabis. Another surprise was when we were watching an old historical drama - I, Claudius. Gran totally caught me off-guard with the amount of knowledge she had about the Roman Empire, it's history and all the emperors!

But the greatest surprise thus far came today. I stopped by for tea, as I sometimes do, and out of boredom we started surfing through the channels. We've stumbled upon one station airing The Two Towers, so naturally I started watching, while Gran was making tea for us. It was soon before the Helm's Deep battle, when Saruman was making gunpowder. Gran looked at the TV and asked, pointing at Saruman, "Is he a mage?"

And we eneded up having a commentary for the rest of the film, with me very briefly explaining the lore of Middle-earth and providing some non-spoilery information. I got some funny comments from this, as well. Couple of times Gran mistook Merry and Pippin for Sam and Frodo, thought that the One Ring was originally made by Men (when Faramir said that it belongs to them), and asked if the Elves have any sort of magic of their own. That was funny, but what can you expect from someone who has never read any of the books or seen the films.

At the end we agreed to marathon the entire trilogy in the future :D
