Single-player is nice and varied and really fun to play. Story-wise, SC2 follows from the first trilogy (which you should play if your computer allows it; the game is so old now that it's incompatible with some systems) and is rather enjoyable. Wings of Liberty, the first instalment, features rather weak writing but Heart of the Swarm does improve on it though, and Legacy of the Void is actually quite interesting.

Just keep in mind that the StarCraft universe is inherently cheesy so don't expect a John le Carré super-complex plot out of it. A lot of nostalgia fanboys have rose-tinted goggles welded over their eyes and try to pretend SC1 was a masterpiece of writing but don't give them too much cred. Then again, there were some pretty cool cinematics for 1998.

...oh yeah, and multiplayer is like 50% of the game. It's stressful but highly enjoyable-- and it's really fun to watch the pros play too. I'm a big fan of Polt (Terran) and HuK (protoss).
