Here's a pretty good Animorphs/Culture one-shot. Which you might have seen already, but I figured I should point you at in case you hadn't.
Who for death, and who for life? And what sort of sacrifice will that entail?
PS: Before anybody complains about me going grimdark because of the Aviator's arc — I've been toying with this idea, in various forms, since 2012.
Hope Des doesn't permanently lose the ability to enjoy tea. That would be grimdark.
I hope Des comes out of this OK.

Aside from you and me, there's also Scapegrace; in fact, she and I are working (ish) on a crossover mission that (also) features the Culture. Brr, that badfic is really bad.
I think it's a toss-up between The Player of Games and Excession (because Minds).
Good luck with the mission. I should hope it's not a Culture badfic, because I've not seen any of those in the usual places.
We only found it because Scape remembered it from somewhere — it's filed under Harry Potter. Here's a link, if you want to tear your hair out; it takes Excession (which is, coincidentally, my favourite Culture book) and butchers it before dancing on what's left of the body.

I have not known this piece. I've read it now, though, and I find it to my liking. It's very nice indeed.
Of course, with medical being the hypercompetent place that it is, Des will be fine... but in what form?
I don't think you quite went anywhere near actual grimdark. Being cyberized seems to be quite normal for that universe, and sooner or later, it's going to happen to an agent. I think what you wrote is more like the non-action parts of an action movie--a good one, where they don't count on the special effects to carry the story. And the Librarian's predicament... well, it seems like he was quite buoyed by the sheer stupidity of his captors! Count on him to take that kind of thing as a morale boost.
So, Des may be in a little trouble, it seems. I'm hoping they can undo whatever cybernetics were done to him, but something tells me it won't be completely reverted (because that would be no fun).
However! Great interlude, great read!
On a somewhat more different note, goodness how you've improved.
Indeed a bit dark, but still had humorous moments.
