Engineer, eh? It's my favourite class, actually. Nobody plays Engineer or Medic when we really need one on the team (usually there's four derpy spies running around and getting themselves killed instead) so I'm almost always seen as a support player. Pyro is fun too, but the W+M1 (walk forward and spam flamethrower) mentality is still strong with the new players. When they learn to airblast properly Pyros can curbstomp Soldiers and Demomen. Puff-and-sting (light enemy on fire, whack them with the crit-axe) still strikes fear into the hearts of many if executed by a good Pyro.
If your computer can handle it, TF2 is free to play. Just download the Steam client, download TF2 and you're good to go. Sure, you might only get 50 backpack slots for your weapons but the game is so worth it it doesn't even matter. All weapons are very well balanced and the only thing that separates new players from the old guard is skill.
