Back when Knut ruled England, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, that is.

Viking dynasties ended up ruling a lot of places, but mostly the major rulers broke up their holdings among their sons. What of they hadn't? If Svein or (more likely) Harold had maintained the North Sea Empire, could they have conquered or brought in the other Viking lands of Ireland and Normandy? It doesn't seem too unlikely.

Then you have the line of three: Iceland to Greenland to Vinland. Is a trade war too modern an idea? If the Iceland route was an alliance (which it would be; they all have to pass through each other to get anywhere!) and decided it no longer wanted to supply Vinland goods to the Empire, might the Empire simply up and invade? Again, it's perfectly possible.

... there must be a book which does this, right?
