You’ve given the rules of engagement, if you will, but not the actual mechanics. I’m curious, but unclear as to how these battles actually play out.

How appropriate that this should happen shortly after the announcement of Gen 8. :)
Since the theme of the tournament last year was Doubles, we're going back to standard rules! Singles format, single elimination (because a double elimination bracket made the tournament we tried that with go on for months).
Team signups will last for one month! You may change your team at any time until the list closes on April 4th.
See the list of rules here. Happy battling, everyone!
I'd have to sign up for Pokémon Showdown and come up with a good team. If anyone wants to give me tips, so far, I've got:
Alolan Golem
Charizard
Gyarados
Arcanine
Kartana
Blastoise
Dragonite
I'm going for high base stats, high base power moves (with some stat boosters), and type advantages.
Here's a couple of tips from a veteran.
1) Don't reveal your teams tactics early. Thanks for telling us what sort of moves you're going for, it makes it easier to work out how to counter your team.
2) Look at your team and think of common weakness that at least 2 of your Pokemon share (for example Charizard, Arcanine, Gyarados and Dragonite are all weak to Rock) do you really want over half your team weak to the same type?
This year's theme is Saved from the Cutting Room Floor!
Hal the Metagross
Kilauea the Volcanion
Regina the Honchkrow
Aramis the Virizon
Altaria (can mega evolve)
Bambi the Sawsbuck
Reserve: Ibuki the Toxicroak

Here's the link if you want to look at it: https://pokemonshowdown.com/ basically on there you can create teams (it is also the tiers on there that the banlists are based on) and then you can challenge people on there to battles and the battles work out much the same as if you were playing Pokemon.
I've got to admit, I have spent hours since this post went up trying to think up a new team to play this year. Then, about fifteen minutes ago I went. "Why create a new team, I won last time we did standard rules." And so with a few minor tweaks I present to you my OU team.
First up, the one, the only. The unbeatable MAMOSWINE!
Second. You know it, you hate it. He'll wash you up. It's ROTOM-W!
Thirdly, this one will sweep you under once again. It's ALAKAZAM!
Next up, a new face, a new force. KARTANA!
Fifth to step up will have you hot under the collar. That's right, HEATRAN is here to stay!
Reminding you not to mess with Fairies, a new 'mon is here. It's MEGA ALTARIA!
And finally, the Snowy Substitute you'd best not mess with. It's ALOLAN NINETALES!
...I might have got a bit too excited
Novastorme.
P.S Warning this may change at some point prior to the 4th April.
I'm not going OTT like my original post.
Alakazam is now Mega Alakazam
Mega Altaria has been replaced by Tapu Koko
Heatran is out and Volcarona is in.
Victini
Gliscor
Lucario
Ninetales-Alola
Scizor
Chansey
Substitute: Crobat
I decided that since I am working on what is intended to be a lengthy fic starting in Kalos, I think I will instead use the Protagonists expected late story team:
Kasumi (Greninja)
Kaylee (Vivillon)
Etna (Charizard) - Mega Stone
Jaws (Garchomp)
Haxor (Haxorous)
Riley (Lucario)
Substitute:
Speedy (Snorlax)
My combatants are as follows:
Young Volcanoes (Heatran)
Rubberband Man (M-Venusaur)
Back in Black (Greninja)
Stay Frosty Royal Milk Tea (Mamoswine)
Magia (Magearna)
Icarus (Tornadus-T)
A sub may come along soon, however today is not that day.
Introducing Team Watercolour Challenge:-
Black Wave (Greninja)
Crimson Tide (Toxapex)
Purple Rain (Swampert)
Sea Green (Pelipper)
Blue Dog (Suicune)
Lavender Water (Tapu Fini)
Substitute: Muddy Waters (Gastrodon)
Not only is it a mono-Water team, they're also all different colours! TASTE THE RAINBOW. TASTE IT. GET IT IN YOUR MOUTH AND LET THE TASTING HAPPEN. YOU CANNOT STOP IT. YOU CAN ONLY HOPE TO CONTAIN IT.
Primarina
Garchomp
Volcarona
Weavile
Crobat
Aggron
No substitute... for now. Might change my mind, but I've never used one in the past so it seems pointless for me to do it now.
I think I'll take a gander at it this year. :)
Battler: S.M.F!
Pokémon: Togekiss (Marisa), Altaria (no nickname), Espeon (Rafael), Torchic (Rachel), Porygon (Webmind), Vaporeon (Nautilus), and Umbreon (Bobo).
No special items for me, or Megas.
