Hello! I'm Cicada. It's nice to meet you all! I like Percy Jackson, Tamora Pierce books, and Holly Black's Modern Faerie Tales. I also read some of the Legend of Drizzt when I was young, and then tried rereading it recently. So, I figured hanging out with the PPC would be a good form of repentance.
I hope this was an ok introduction. Nice to meet you all! -

Apologies for having your introduction hijacked by yet another of Bram's attempts to harass us. Usually there's not so much drama around here. -

Because we all know that restarting the same conversation over again isn't going to be useful. Hi Bram, etc, please go away.

We have a troll who follows us around. My personal advice is to ignore them.
If you want to know the gory details we have full documentation of everything that happened at the prior link. But suffice to say, it was pretty ugly. -

Olympus, this troll seems... like something else. I suppose it's good if I'm given such a strong example of how not to act! I just assumed that this was a sporkee who was not happy about being missioned.

I mean, I like chocolate-flavored things, and I like strange scientific or magical experiments, so I greatly appreciate the gift!

Have two cents, so you can put them into discussions later!
(Also, the accounts feature on the Board is really finicky, it's better to just put your name into "Author" every time, sadly) -

I'm also somewhat interested in learning to become a beta reader- is there a procedure akin to Permission?

People will post open calls you can respond to or might ask you to beta if you get to know them better.
If people find that you're good at providing feedback, on grammar, canon, plot, structure, or anything else that makea a piece better, then people will be more likely to ask you to beta in the future. -

Awesome! I hope I can be helpful! Is it generally preferred to post feedback on the document or some sort of private message, or is posting on the Board ok?

Being a Beta Reader
Constructive Criticism
I think the first one answers your question, but just to be sure: usually, someone who needs a beta will post a request on the Board providing basic information about the story. If you're interested in beta-reading, you post a reply saying so and provide your email address. The author will then contact you with further details about what they're looking for from the beta process and, in most cases, an invitation to comment on the Google Doc where the story is located. (I don't think there's anyone here who doesn't work in Gdocs at this point.) You make all specific suggestions for improvement of SPaG and such in the doc, and possibly sum up with general impressions by email.
DON'T post beta feedback about unfinished stories to the Board. Reviewing finished stories on the Board is great and highly encouraged, though, and utilizes much the same skills!
Actually, if you're interested, I have an interlude cooling its heels in the beta pool at the moment (my other beta is a busy person). If you want to jump right in, I wouldn't mind you having a look, and I can help with any other questions you have about the process and the PPC. {= ) The story is about one of my most established characters, Supernumerary, but it happens to be based on one of the Permission prompts, "The agent(s) have to recover a lost [child, in this case] in their care." I don't think you'd need much, if any, prior knowledge of my spin-offs to follow it.
Either way, welcome!

I'd be happy to beta your interlude, but unfortunately I'm not finished reading through your archived stories, so I don't think I'd be able to provide much helpful feedback. I'm also having a bit of a busy week, so I likely won't be super active until Sunday. Thanks so much for the offer, though!
