We probably knew him best in these parts as Bilbo Baggins of the Shire, but he did double-duty in Middle-earth; he was Frodo in the 1981 BBC radio adaptation, the soundtrack of which has been burnt into my memory since childhood.
He was also an extremely accomplished stage actor. Harold Pinter once famously said of him "He puts on my shoe, and it fits!". Quite what he meant by that is, like most things involving Harold Pinter, open to interpretation, but the fact remains he was Pinter's favourite actor to work with and won several stage awards, including an Olivier for his Lear. I think it's important that we remember things like that; too often nerd circles only remember someone's contributions to our little bubbles of experience while ignoring their massive influence on the wider world.
He will be deeply missed.
I, too, remember him as the voice of Frodo first. I still say the radio drama is the best LotR adaptation there is. A kind soul called Inkmore has made the whole series available on Soundcloud, if anyone wants to check it out. Also exists on CD.
