Since, you know, all we've been hearing from BBC Sherlock on this board are badfics, I might as well rec a goodfic that was finished today.

All right, if you're not into AU it might not be your cup of tea, but this is Sherlock in a Pirates of the Caribbean-esque setting. Sherlock as a pirate, essentially. And he forms a bond with a merman he calls John.
The plot is fantastic; there are some really intense scenes, and I mean intense as in battling and pirating and stuff. If you're not into graphic violence and cannibalism (these mermaids are bloody vicious, I tell you), this fic may also not be your cup of tea.
But for the rest of us, I highly recommend this fic for the emotional manipulation and vivid detail, as well as the excellent characterisation.

I have to admit, at first I was wondering what a space-exploration story was doing on FIMFiction, but once I realized the narrator was documenting his exploration of the world of My Little Pony, I understood - and oh my goodness, this story is awesome! Thankies for the link!
