Subject: The scariest/best thing about The Host...

... is that we've already lost. It's not a story about Humanity's Resistance To The Invaders - or about Those Poor Subjugated Aliens - it's about Earth under occupation. Worse than occupation - humanity is, for all intents and purposes, extinct. Even counting controlled people who still retain some part of their minds, you're looking at way more than a 99% extinction rate.

It shares this with... not a lot, actually. The Dalek Invasion of Earth has that same 'So here's the aliens... oh, they're already in charge' effect, but loses out to being from the 60s. More recently (and still in Doctor Who) you have Last of the Time Lords, which was equally scary (until the ending) with it's depiction of an Earth not embattled, but... conquered. Subjugated. Finished.

But both of those had a single point of failure that let it be wrapped up by the end. The Host doesn't. The only real hope it offers after the closing pages is... that the survivors might survive a bit better now.

It's a scary book.

So why did she move on to sparkly vampires?
