Good humor, twists, lots to enjoy. A good number of references probably went way over my head, but I will most certainly be getting more Pratchett books for myself soon.

(Easy answer; they're all good ones. ^_~)
You're coming in on characters who've already had a couple of books about them, but that's fine: Pratchett's lead characters are often fairly archetypical, so my advice is to just ignore anything that suggests you should know them already and roll with it.
The nice thing about Pratchett is that, while Maskerade assumes familiarity with a certain other famous story set in an opera house, the humour still works either way. I first read it before I had more than a vague understanding of the story it's referencing, and it was still excellent.

That was one time, and it was during the Shipfic Fest, so it doesn't count. Who among us can honestly say we haven't had underpants (our own or otherwise) on our head during a Shipfest at least once?
(( I am "legally" "obligated" to state that this post is 100% the product of my imagination as far as I'm aware, but it wouldn't surprise me if there has been an actual Shipfest fic where this happens. ))
