Averaged just below 400 words per minute, which is apparently approx. 55% higher than average.
It did put me just below 'average college student' though, which I found a bit disappointing.
I was expecting to get higher, although I do tend to skim-read stuff normally, so I guess that's given me a false impression of how quickly I read.
"You read 506 words per minute. That makes you 102% faster than the national average."
I find it interesting that I apparently read faster this time reading 15 paragraphs than I did reading just 4. I also did not realize the excerpt was from War of the Worlds until now.... which is sad, since I've actually read the book before.

War of the Worlds: 251 words per minute, 0% above national average
Alice in Wonderland: 308 words per minute, 23% above national average
The Wizard of Oz: 267 words per minute, 7% above national average
I'm surprised I got fast scores at all, actually; I always thought I read slowly, due to comments from classmates and my desire to savor the action.
(I also got all the review questions right :3)
Average is 327.25 wpm (over 4 tries). Apparently that's 50% above the US average.
I average about 250 words per minute (did the test a few times), which is a bit below the average. I am not surprised. I have always found myself to be a slow reader.

is that supposed to happen or is the link messed up?
Looks like it mucked up.
Try this.
I can't reply to the original post, so here goes.
First: 654 per minute.
Second: 928 per minute.
Third: 914 per minute.
Forgot the percentages, sorry- though if the nation in question is the USA, then it probably wouldn't have been relevant.
My average over all three excerpts was 1,070 words per minute, with all review questions answered correctly. Not bad for someone who has never taken a speed reading course.
A bit faster than when my 7th grade science class tested our reading speeds, but 1) I've had more practice since then and 2) those tests were being administered by seventh grade students, I'm certain we didn't do them right.
Whenever I click Post Reply to the original post, I get linked to the Staples site.
But anyway, here are my results.
War of the Worlds: 1942 words/min. 677% faster than the national average. All questions correct.
Alice in Wonderland: 1481 words/min. 492% faster than the national average. All questions correct.
The Wizard of Oz: 1686 words/min. 574% faster than the national average. All questions correct.
