To ask a question.
Does ANYONE else think the Tale of Beren and Luthien would make a MUCH better movie than the - the *thing* they are trying to pass off as the Hobbit?
And is anyone else now praying that a Hollywood exec is not reading this?
And I think it's a fine concept for a movie.
But yes, The Tale of Beren and Luthien would make a good movie, though honestly I was surprised that even the Hobbit got greenlit. I have given up hope for anything from the Silmarillion, though with the Hobbit getting made anything could happen.
It would be interesting to read the fanfic that would result from such a movie. Sues after Beren? Luthien bashing?
Also, shouldn't we be hoping that a Hollywood exec. is a ppc-er/reading this. That would be awesome!
I guess I'm in the 'IT WAS MY CHILDHOOD' camp. The Thorin Oakenshield in my head wasn't anything like that. Although it looks kickace.
Ehhhh, Hollywood is the reason we can't have nice things. They'd cast Kristen Stewart as Luthien or something. And then we'd ALL die of shame. If an indie studio did it, we could enjoy it, but if Hollywood did it, they'd make it all. about. Luthien's. boobs. -_-
I didn't like the LOTR movies much... Though I know they tried... You just can't get that feeling of mono no aware into a movie. That's a Japanese phrase that means, more or less, "the pathos of things"... according to Wikipedia, the Fount of Knowledge, "the awareness of impermanence (無常 mujō?), or the transience of things, and a gentle sadness (or wistfulness) at their passing." It's a word we don't have in English, but it's PERFECT for LoTR...
And hoo boy. XD Poor Luthien. And Beren would get an even angstier, more tragic backstory than he needs to have... *cough* like Legolas *cough*...
I accepted long ago that if anything was going to be turned into a
Movie it would be fundamentally changed, though not neccesarily for the worse. Film is just a completely different medium, and therefore the feeling is going to change.
I can understand your opinion, but I like both film and book, book only a little bit more. And I have some faith in Hollywood. They may have messed up transformers completely, but Tolkein is still pretty good.
And oh god, the more I think about the imaginary ToBaL movie, the more awful fanfic I imagine. Abusive!Thingol! Badass feminist sue that gets 50 Silmarils in 5 minutes! Purity sues that magically revive Finrod with their tears!
