I think the AUs thing depends if they have some kind of widely-agreed canon, for example if in some types of AUs the characters are written in a specific way, for exmple in Death Note it's believed that one of the characters has red eyes, but it is never said in the canon story, it's just a widely-agreed thing. Hope it helps a bit.

I'm not sure what others might think, but I personally believe that AUs are far more generalized that genuine spin-off canons. AUs can be boiled down to a few types: the High School AU, the Zombie AU, the What-If AU, and so on.

Actual spin-off continuities should be able to stand on their own in some regard and should have some measure of recognition from outsiders. They should have their own characters and own rules. They've also usually either been running for a while or have racked up a lot of stories in a short amount of time. The machnima series Red vs Blue, for example, is set in the Halo universe but has developed enough of its own characters and plots to be considered a separate entity.

While I am not familiar with Pokegirls, a cursory read-through of the appropriate TV Tropes page makes me think that it would stand as its own canon. It has its own rules and backstory as established by the community. Fanfiction about a canon like that would probably come from outside of the community, stuff from non-approved writers. It's a bit like PPC stories in that regard, actually.
