Though as a writer of PPC missions and of stories in present tense, I take some offense that writing in present tense is a charge.
Present tense may not be your cup of tea, but as long as the author manages to keep their tenses straight (and doesn't mix randomly with past tense), present tense is acceptable for writing stories. -

Lee's not a big fan of present tense stuff. I personally don't mind it; as you said, if the author can pull it off, that's perfectly fine.
