But I have to say, I'm impressed by the imagery. Is that meant to look like a Balrog?

Has anyone else seen the new plans that Blizzard has for WoW? If not, watch the new expansion trailer: http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/cataclysm/
The link to the trailer is in the lower right.
All I can say is squee.
IT IS GOING TO BE BLOODY AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any thoughts? Anyone else looking forward to this?

Page blocked. *swears at ridiculous library censoring system which allows porn through, but not WoW*
However, I'd likely still be more impressed by BioWare's trailer for The Old Republic. Damn, BioWare needs to start making films.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxgDAQB8kFM&feature=fvsr (I'm pretty certain that's the right link. Now YouTube won't load *swears some more*)
Wrong link. It's the right video, but it's a seperate thing. *sighs*
Here's the right one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOvbv-LkK6w&feature=related *drools*
*/Gollom* That game looks awsome.
for the last month or so. It spawned a fic in my brain. Which spawned quite a few more. Fail, Jade, fail.
I played WoW for about a week once and never really got into it but I see screenshots and videos that make it look so interesting. Maybe I was playing it wrong.
This sounds good. While I still cannot afford the game and its regular online payments, i've been paying attention to its universe for several years now, and I must say, I like what I see.

It's meant to look like a dragon that is on fire.
Seems like it should be more metallic, though, since deathwing holds the title of the only dragon to fuse adimantium onto his skin.
What will make things interesting is the fact that one of the other four god-dragons is dead, another is probably busy in the dreamworld and may have turned evil, and yet another may currently have always been stuck fighting temporal anomalies possibly created by himself in the future.
That leaves one godlike dragon to fight deathwing, which is not percisely a fair matchup.
Okay, I think I get it.
Still, that's an awfully Balrog-esque dragon ;P
In many of the dungeons and raids there are references to popular movies and books. One of the metals that you get to mine in the game is even mithryl.

Though there is that sorta-maxim, "All fantasy is a Lord of the Rings ripoff; all sci-fi is an Aliens ripoff".
I understand the first part of that maxim--that's why I have a hard time finding fantasy I like--but I don't know where the second bit comes from. I've read/seen a lot of original sci-fi, and the unoriginal stuff doesn't generally remind me of Alien(s).

They'll deride pretty much anything sci-fi, especially if it's military, as an Aliens ripoff. Especially in video games.
Mithril shouldn't exist in any fandom without a place called Moria. It translates to 'Moria silver'. So why does Oblivion have mithril (which is nowhere near indestructable either)? Same goes for orcs. Weren't the orcs specific to LotR as well (not sure about this one)?
According to wiki, Tolkien started the modern depiction of orcs, yes. The name apparently comes from an Old English word for "demon". Have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orc
I thought orc was a word from Middle-Earth's languages. Very well, I suppose others can use it. But mithril is unacceptable and I can't understand why the Tolkien estate hasn't sued. Mithril should at least be under trademark.
...no pun intended.
I seriously wish now that I hadn't given up playing World of Warcraft. This looks epic.
WANT.
I love the ideas that they have for the new expansion. I have been waiting for some of this content to come out. They are answering a lot of questions and filling in a lot of blank spots on the map.
I can't wait.
how is the leveling system going to work? Basically they are killing all the low level areas and making them high level (bloody awsome, but still high level).
Guess they want the origional cities to be used more again. Plus flying mounts in Azeroth is going to be hell on the maps (we can just fly into the reagons that have been blocked off before...)

Some of the low level areas are still around. Also, some of the high level areas are being reworked into low level areas. Azshara is a good example of that. I also recall seeing something called Path of the Titans that I believe had something to do with leveling.
They are going to be reworking all of the maps. You will barely recognize the places that are still mostly unchanged by the geological upheaval. They have start over from scratch to incorporate the flying into Kalimdor and The Eastern Kingdoms.
