On a whim I just wandered back here though it's been a while. It's nice to see the board is mush the same as it's always been. ^_^

Wow. I wander back in after 5 years and it's like nothing has changed - well, except some of the names, but I remember Huinesoron and Neshomeh and... wow, I've missed you guys. *overcome with sudden nostalgia*
Anyway, I dropped back by because my boyfriend recently started asking me some questions about LotR, and that made me remember how much I enjoyed this community. I just wanted to see if you guys were still around.
For those of you who weren't here 5+ years back, hi - I'm Laureril, also known as Laura (irl) or Agents Erin and Maralys of the Dept. of Mary Sues LotR division.
In real life, I'm finishing up a BA in Linguistics, with a minor in Comp Sci. I'm not sure when/if I'll get back involved here - I've got a lot on my plate atm, but it's strangely good to be back. Gah, I haven't really written fanfic in years.
So don't mind me, or my entourage of minis, I'm just sticking my head in to say hi.

Yup, remember you too. I kinda hope I can poke my head back in from time to time whenever I need a little snarky pick-me-up. I guess eventually I may need to leave it to the new generation, lest I turn into the next Bast. xD
I *think* I remember the name, but I don't think I was here way back when.
And I know how education can be. I got a pair of agent's that'll probably never see the light of day and a huge Crossover from Heck that is floundering into oblivion.
However, I did get bitten by the Bay!verse bug thank's to a good fic, but now that fic is heading in areas i don't really appreciate so... I'm concentrating on my own thingy kinda *inspired* by that fic series.
If an old-bie wants to have look at the work of a newbie with a few failed projects and an "old shame" behind himself, here it is in all it's shameless pluggage.

Your Fellow Boarder
-Gandalf "Empty Thread" Beige
you were one of the people who offered me help with my sadly-defunct undergrads crossover? Or were you a member of the Anti-Tentacle-Society-League-Thing? Or possibly one of the responders when I reported my first Legendary Bad-Fic (Ch* Ch*ng's D*s*r*s)?
By the way, has anyone slain that thing yet and if so, where can I read the report?
Anywho, welcome back again.
(note: ever since I gave Movie!Frenzy a paddleball, he's mauled anyone who's tried to take it away, so watch it.)
Like, I think I remember seeing your de-lurk and some subsequent discussion, but I can't really remember what all was said. ATSLT rings a bell tho.
And I have no clue what badfic that is, but I've survived worse, I'm sure. I've actually read C***br**n all the way through (and lived to tell about it!) To Google!
*rides off valiantly to add another notch to her bad slash bedpost.*
Welcome back.
I was not here five years ago , but I do welcome you back. So, what minis do you have?
*hands over a plate full of bacon, several mini bags of bacon for the deer critters and a cookbook on how to cook mary sues for the minis.*
Erin adopted:
Calymac (Balrog)
Raveclaw (Aragog)
Maralys adopted:
Pretty much the entire entourage of mini-Draconians that were never adopted. (OFUKrynn Co-Headmistress)
Aaand I've got a couple of mini-boarders running around. *waves at Lauril, Laureil, and Laurel*
Ty for the goodies - they're pretty proficient in Mary Sue cooking, but nothing like a few new recipes. =)
Want a few mini deepcoilers?
And speaking of OFUs, I help run OFUR. So any ideas on how ot torture fanbrats is welcome.
Oh. And your welcome. Mary Sue cooking is a vital part for the minis. Although, how were the initial few cookings? pretty bad?
You're welcome to read through OFUK - what there is of it. I kinda left it at a giant cliffhanger. >
Btw - were you looking for Wyldehorse? I posted on your thread the other page, but as it's on page 2, I don't know if you'll see it. I guess I'll just reiterate here real fast:
http://www.geocities.com/PPCdirectory/
It's ancient and completely out of date, but has a lot of the older boarders on it. It took me googling my old e-mail address to find it! I looked and Wylde is on there, so by all means good luck getting in touch.
Does that still exist somewhere? My boyfriend might be interested in reading it. {= )
~Neshomeh, who has two words to scare you to death: Kender agent.
http://laureril.bravehost.com/fictionHome.html
You can look there - it's not really been updated since I wandered off in 2006ish, and it's missing a chapter I lost when it was taken off FF.n
And have you met Maralys Deeppockets? I'll give you a clue - she has a hoopack, a CAD, and doesn't need bleeprin.
Welcome back, then. And have a graduated cylinder. :]
Welcome back! Here, have an egg whisk.
They whisk not only eggs, but spambots author wraiths, too. Nifty things, egg whisks.
My envy knows basically no bounds. I really love linguistics, and was planning to major in it at one point (then I went to classical studies, then I went to Latin Teaching, then I went back to classical studies . . . then I dropped out of college to move to England. Ahh, my life)
Welcome back to the board! :D I'm kind of amazed that it's still active too . . .
I've only been on here for a year and a half, so you won't know me, but I wave and smile at you nonetheless. :)
We can have a proper Welcome Back party. ^_^
College is time-devouring and evil. Good luck with all that real life stuff!
~Neshomeh
yay! Parties! It's nice you still have them here since I'm certainly not going to any at college. Too much HW...ick
I'm more than a little fuzzy about how long I've been gone, and have no clue how long I'll be sticking around. But WELCOME BACK! and I'd help you restock on bleeprin but I just lost all mine to Neshomeh on a bet.
AH! I'd stay longer, but the gravitational pull of my O-Chem HW is drawing me inexorably into its singularity! Enjoy the party! And throw some treats into the singularity for me! At least every, uh oh, EVERY ONCE IN A WHIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLE.......

~E.N.
We've a wiki now. Which still lacks many agents from older spin offs. *bad hint*
Nice to see another Oldbie returning to the Board, even if only for a visit. Have a medium-sized stuffed prinny before you go! Now minus the exploding, so don't worry about that - the new models can be thrown without turning the recipients into small pieces of unidentifiable matter.
No, wait. All those are gone due to Pink Stuff...
Leto
Have some welcoming welcomes of welcomeness!
We're still alive and kicking!
How do Linguistics and Comp Sci overlap? I'm a CS major myself, trying to minor in Japanese, but I can't really see how it would work the other way around...
I remember you - good to see the resident techie is still around.
To answer your question:
Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics.
Fun stuff - like machine translation and syntactic parsers. My theory is that if I know enough about the linguistics side, I can help design stuff, and then send it off to people who are better at programming than me to make it work. Plus there's sometimes a lot of prep work in compiling corpora and most of that is very syntactic/linguistics-y.
I was originally planning on going into Comp Sci, but I couldn't keep up with the math, and the programming was getting over my head. Now I'm in Linguistics, which still kicks my butt on occasion, but at least there's less debugging.
We briefly touched on that stuff in my programming language design class, I'm expecting to hit it a lot harder in the Compilers class next semester.
(I am rather sad that programming language design didn't involve actually designing a programming language, but I suspect that's beyond the scope of a three-credit one-semester class...)
