The ESSAY! by

*nurses bruised arms* As I have been so pointedly reminded - ;p - I promised you all a copy of my university project, the informative essay on fanfiction. So... here it is.
Let me say, though, that I sincerely hope you won't be disappointed - this was not, after all, written for those of us who already know the fanfic world, but rather as an introduction for those who don't. So there won't be anything here that you lot don't already know.
I was going to do this on LJ or googledocs, but my nice formatting with the pictures would have been lost, so instead I've turned it into a PDF file - two of them, actually. A long version, which includes the appendix, citations and bibliography, and a short version, which does not, and should be nicer to slow connections.
In case you wonder about the thin black box under the subtitle - that was my name, but as I'd like to keep my internet and real life identites separate, I blacked it out. Not that I don't trust you, of course - :) - but I do want to publish a longer version of this as a proper book someday - soon - and so I'm a little protective. Hence, also, why I made it a PDF. Please don't share it around too much; show people, sure (particularly parents and teachers - who complain about us "wasting our time" on the net - hint, hint, Ciri), but don't give other people copies of the file, or link them to the download. Please.
If any of you don't have the reader program for PDF files, email me and I'll send you a Word copy. fanwriter_sedri@hotmail.com
Feel free to tell me if you find anything you disagree with, that is factually wrong, or that you think I misinterpreted. Spelling/punctuation errors too, if you want, but as it's already been handed in, there's not much point there.
And... yeah. Hope you like it - particularly those of you I interviewed. *crosses fingers*

Really, I'm beginning to think that simple words won't do it justice. Let's put it this way: I am highly considering showing my parents this essay.
My parents, who have always been at least slightly dubious about fanfiction and the various other shenanigans I get up to on the internet. :P
Well done, I say. Well done. Also, bonus points for pointing me at goodfic. =D -

Show your parents, I mean. That's what it exists for, after all.

I wish I'd had this to show around when I was in high school. I had to prove fanfic and role-play weren't ruining my life through sheer persistence, which often wasn't pretty. ^^;
Anyway, it's a very well-written essay. The way you keep coming back to The Wizard of Oz and Wicked really helps tie it together.
And, a little self-indulgent moment: Yay, I got quoted! ^^ I'm glad I said something useful to you.

You're in there twice, I think. Once in separately and once in the middle of a paragraph.
*hugs* Thanks! I was having trouble trying to use examples that everyone would know, sticking with things like Harry Potter, LotR and so on, but my teacher gave me the idea of describing one story early on to frame it, so I took that idea and ran with it. I'm very pleased with how it turned (not to mention the fact that I'm completely in love with Wicked just now.
Ah, I ramble. Sorry - that's me being self-indulgent. *hugs* Thanks again! -

Ehem. Sedri you are awesome. I think you are brilliant and I loved the essay. Major love goes out to you and those you interviewed and all that goodfic you collected in one place. Wunderbar!
Hugs and kudos from Mystia.

In case anyone's having trouble downloading it... by

Megaupload does a lot of advertising - sorry 'bout that - and makes things rather complex.
The links I gave you will go to a very busy page with no direct download link - you need to find an orange "download" button next to a box and a three-letter picture code. Enter the code, hit the button, and it will take you to another busy page with a table showing how their premium downloads are so much better. Ignore that and look at the little button saying "please wait _ seconds" - it has a countdown from thirty, then turns into a "free download" button. Click that.
Sorry again.
In better news, I just made an account at FictionPress to host the whole thing there, permanenetly, but they have a two-day waiting period for new members, so I can't put it up just yet. My account is

Just the citations for the in-text quotes and a list of stories, which is aimed more at my professor than those of us who can find good 'fics for ourselves.

And then go to your recycle bin and delete it from there, too. I promise it's not contaminated, though.

Did you choose 'Open With...' or 'Save To..' when you downloaded it? If you chose the first one then it'll have gone into a temporary folder. If you choose the latter then you'll have to find where you saved it to delete it.
