Do you want the long answer, or the short answer? Short answer: because it's a funny, well animated and cartoon, with great characters and a vibrant world with tremendous potential for exploration.

The long answer, however, may take a while. Instead of me going on a rant about the history of the fandom and the reasons why the show is amazing, I'll just leave a few links to things that may help you understand.

However, the best advice for anybody wondering why is to just watch the show. I'm not going to be that guy who says that everybody who watches it must love it. The show is not for everybody, and it is far from perfect, but it is definitely one of the best cartoons airing today. I am also not going to say that you have to watch the entire series before you can pass judgement. I would say, give it five episodes, any order, two-parters only count as one. After you've seen five episodes, then you have a bit of a choice to make. Do you want to keep going, or is this show just not for you? Even if you decide it's not for you, hopefully you can see why so many people love this show.
