What do you guys think about Almost Human?
Personally, I was very impressed with it. The science is really cool (and for the most part seems plausible), and the cases that they do every week are pretty enthralling.
I also like the whole foggyness when it comes to Dorian and whether he is a person or not. We know that he's a machine, but he isn't treated as just a machine.
Does he have a soul? Does he have rights? I hope we get a new season to consider these questions.
It's one of the few shows I watch, and it's pretty rad so far. Crossing my fingers it doesn't get cancelled.
(And hi again PPC, by the way.)
I'm not sure if Global is following Fox in their airing episodes, but I'm watching it on the Canadian network. I've missed a few episodes here and there, so, I can't exactly say if it seems out of order.
That said, I really enjoy the show. It makes me laugh out loud on several occasions each episode; usually at Dorian's antics.
I hope Fox doesn't cancel this show like it did Firefly.
One episode in, and my only major worldbuilding question is: What is the wall? Why was it built? How do they maintain the status quo re: the wall?
I had to start on episode 9, because Hulu is being tempramental, so I assume some of those questions were answered earlier. That said, I jumped in on 9 and was able to follow along, which is always nice.
It's unfair that Fox aired the episodes out of order. I really want to see what it's like in order; people who have done it say it makes everything make sense. As it is, the narration feels choppy because it's being aired out of order.
That being said, Dorian is precious and John is just McCoy as a cop and I really hope John/Dorian becomes canon because they honestly seem to care for each other a lot and I like representation.
The other characters are great, though. I love Rudy. He's adorable. I want to see what happens if he meets Hermann from Pacific Rim. Like how I want to see what happens if Dorian meets Data from Star Trek.
Because I feel like they've done that before and not gotten the viewership they wanted and then cancelled a show... oh, wait.
Glaurung it, Fox, you had one job!
Data would be so jealous of Dorian. Here's an android who desperately wants to be human, and here's another android who is almost indistinguishable from humans. Dorian would be very empathetic and explain how Data doesn't need emotions or reactions, that he's fine just the way he is.
I disagree with you on the John/Dorian point, though.
While they do care for each other, that is not the only requirement for a romantic relationship, and I don't think that they are particularly compatible in that sense. A good friendship is not equivalent nor prophetic of a romantic relationship. I have been friends with a guy since I was three, we've been going to the same school since we were 6, and now in university we're housemates. With all of that, we have no romantic interest.
I also have a female friend who is in all of my classes and who I've been hanging out with for the last year and a half. I have absolutely no romantic interest in her either, even though we're fairly compatible.
The tl;df of this is that friendship doesn't have to lead to romance, in spite of the fact that society tells us that it does.
in terms of queer representation on TV we are constantly fed the idea that male-identifying characters who are close are just bros whereas heterosexual friendships inevitably end in romantic interest. It would be nice if a drama like this with two male leads had them get together, just like how it was nice that Holmes and Watson in Elementary, who are of different genders, do not and will not get together.
As it is, all of the indications that John and Dorian care for each other can go both into a friendship or a romance, but if the writers decide to suddenly declare that both are heterosexual, it would be considered queerbaiting, which is harmful to idea of more diversity in this predominantly heteronormative media (cough cough, John and Sherlock in BBC Sherlock).
And that's why I hope they make John/Dorian canon. I think they work both as a friendship and a relationship, but it would be a great thing for us queer viewers to see representation for us in the form of John and Dorian expressing romantic/sexual interest in one another. The setting is futuristic, so it conceivably should have more diversity in its interpersonal relationship dynamics.
Also, while we're on the topic of representation: Frequently, characters of colour in media aren't the love interest. To have Dorian be John's love interest would be another point in terms of representation, since not only would they be main characters in a queer relationship, they would also be an interracial couple and huzzah, queer people of colour who watch this show can find more to identify with in Dorian.
tl;dr: I know friendships don't have to lead to romance, but imagine the queer -- especially queer POC -- representation we'd get if it happens.
