I generally stay away from fandoms because more often than not, other people take the obsession a bit too far for my liking. I love the Sherlock series, don't get me wrong, but some of the speculation in regards to "head canon" and other theories is beyond me.

Fangirls scare me. Especially the ones on tumblr.

With that said, I didn't watch the video, because frankly, I don't care that much. Was it a slash fic?

...but that seems like a stupid thing to do. Imagine how the author feels that someone who's part of their favorite show doesn't like their fanfiction about it. Badfic authors take it /very/ badly.

Making actors read stuff about their characters that is probably going to make them uncomfortable: you do not get a gold star from miss manners.

Sporkings stay on the internet for a reason: that way people who are interested can see them, and the people who aren't don't.

While sporkings and dramatic readings of anything published (that includes internet fanfiction, it's been released for public consumption) are fair play, taking up the issue in a public gathering and forcing the actors to participate is not in good taste.

It also shows disrespect for the show and the actors, because this event was supposed to be about them and the new season coming out.

I'm just baffled, honestly. How was this allowed to happen? Doesn't anyone go through the itinerary for events like this, especially for something well-known like Sherlock? Was there honestly an organizer that looked at the schedule, saw "from [times to be announced] we're reading a selected fanfiction in public because one of the featured guests doesn't like it, but we're not going to share it with any of the other featured guests beforehand to see if they're okay with doing so" and said, "Yep, looks like that checks out."
The video wouldn't load for me past the first twenty seconds or so, but judging by the longer of the Tumblr responses you linked to, everyone involved was confused or uncomfortable during it, which supports that either they had no idea what was going to happen or were misinformed, which again, is not something that should have been allowed to happen. If it was an informed and planned occurrence, and they got everything approved by the author of the fanfic, the featured guests, and whoever's in charge of the event, that's one thing, but from what I've been able to find, it wasn't even close to any of that. Shameful.

I do take some issue with the argument that Moran took the work without the author's permission. (It was posted openly on the web, Moran didn't steal a flashdrive with it on and I doubt the author got permission from anyone at the BBC before she wrote the fic.) I am, however, also able to tell the difference between, say, doing a PPC mission and posting about it on a small message board in a corner of the internet or doing a dramatic reading on one's youtube channel and what Moran did, which was taking a not-that-good-fic (haven't read it myself, but none of the reports point to it being truly horrible) and mocking it in front of a large audience.

I suppose that for me, the biggest crime was making the actors read it. I'm going to make an educated guess and say that they are already aware of what's out there. Maybe they hate it, maybe they read some of it in private and giggle at it. Most likely they don't care, they just don't want it shoved into their faces.

Hey kitty! it's the returnbie with the similar username that has now changed to a different username! My opinion is pretty much that I agree with you, keep your fanfics away from the actual cast, because that shit is impolite.
