As all of you LoTR fans know, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug is coming out THIS FRIDAY. And with Peter Jackson writing and Orlando Bloom acting, we all know what that means.
Fanfic Explosions are imminent! Run for the Beverly Hills!
Or don't, because you'll be waiting with sharpened sporks for whatever badfic come with it.
But whichever it is, get ready. December 13th is this Friday. -

Good thing I'm waiting for next Monday to go and see it - I made a pact with my brother not to see it without him. :D

From a review I've read it's apparently better than the first one.
Let's hope so.
(And let's also not hope for Legolas-Tauriel-Kili-OC love polygon, which I think has a great chance of happening.) -

I'm rather excited/nervous. I can't really decide. For spoilery details, you can check out what I predicted down in the thread below. If you don't want your movie to be ruined, don't read. Hoo boy, what a line-up we have, eh? "Orly", "Evie" and Lee...oh, and throw Benedict in too. And here you go! The perfect concoction for a fanfic explosion.

For those who do not wish to watch DoS with a tensed-up heart, please, please, I beg you, do not read the below comment. It is spoiler-free, but it'll produce some outraged reactions from the devoted Tolkien fan.

"DOS is the litmus test that will separate Book Fans from Movie Fans more distinctly than anything before it, or I’ll eat my knickers." What can this mean? The review mentioned that "the extent DoS deviates from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original, you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a very vocal fan reaction, if not an outright scream of frustration from one or two up in the balcony", and that "P.J. has been quoted in Empire as saying 'I’m quite enjoying deviating from the books!'"
What!?
Oh dear, oh dear. *wrungs hands nervously* I'm not sure about this...

We already knew there were going to be deviations - after all, they're making three movies. They had to expand it somehow. The first one deviated, why would we expect this one to be otherwise
And hey, if P.J. enjoyed expanding on the plot and creating new material, then that just means he's enjoying his job. All I'm looking for is for the new plot points to make sense. I read The Hobbit right before watching Unexpected Journey and still enjoyed it, so I think I'll be okay.
The only thing I'm worried about is Tauriel, because female characters have a history of being represented badly in movies. If she gets shunted into the role of Love Interest I will be very upset. -

AUJ was surprisingly loyal by Peter Jackson's standards. I think, for DoS, that Peter Jackson's just going to overblow the details from the book. Well, other than Tauriel. And that part where [spoiler]. And there's [spoiler]. Then, Thranduil somehow [spoiler]. Oh glod, why am I spewing spoilers everywhere? And I haven't even seen the movie.

This should be very fun. by

I suppose I should bring my book and start chanting quotes whenever I spot a deviation, then.
