In 99.9% the characters believe their world is real, and I personally think fan-mades are the same, until being introduced to the PPC.
Then again, you have things like Marvel universe, and Deadpool, who is perfectly aware he's a fictional character and exists in a comic book.
How aware are canon characters and fan characters of being fictional creations? Is it different for each character? Like how Bugs Bunny once spoke in a movie about having several "fathers"? Do you have to explain to them ever?
