I never got into cosplay so much to get any sort of professional or semi-professional materials. I use things I have around me.
The funniest thing is, it turned out to be twice the size of my head.
I found an old photo from 2012 for a local Con. It was supposed to be a tonned down version of Johnny Depp's portrayal of the Mad Hatter with some Victorian era accents.
Ingredients:
The Mad Hat
- Cardboard
- Isolation tape (black, several rolls)
- Yellow ribbon
- Several playing cards
Clothes
- Plain ol' dress shirt
- My moms old coat, with the sleeves cut off
- Random Con pins (optional)
- Pocket watch with chain
The Cane of Madness
- PCV pipe (brown)
- smaller metal pipe (painted gold)
- Leg of a wooden pallet (shaped on a lathe, painted gold)
You could fit three whole rabbits in that hat!
Most people struggle with one!

Since I restarted mini4wd racing in 2013, my only 1st place was obtained with a car built with these exact materials:
- A chassis originally scrapped for a defect in the gear cover latching, repaired initially for use in a track-cleaning car and then heavily modified for use in a front engine configuration (weight balance reason, and that kind of chassis oddly works better when the motor is running in the "wrong" direction)
- Body, bearings, rear FRP plate, wheels and assorted other parts coming from a car and some spares a coworker gave me (he stopped racing 7-8 years ago... and so all those parts were sitting gatherign dust for that long)
- Rear brake plate modified from one I had improved during a race about a year ago
- Motor and rollers "borrowed" from other cars of mine (of which I'm going to have to buy more)
It was supposed to be only a prototype, and was in fact a rather rough build... but, once worked out some details, it proved to be pretty fast.
So, humble materials can and will obtain spectacular results if used the right way.
Duck you wouldn't guess about it without knowing it. You've got talent.
