Haldo, I'm Badger!
As the title says, I started hanging about here a somewhat ridiculous amount of time ago (2011, I think) after discovering the Original Series through OFUM, but I never quite got around to introducing myself. Partly because I wasn't much of a writer, partly because I was a bit of a recluse. This year, though, I decided it was high time to remedy that.
So, to get right to it, I am a Washington lad currently living in Texas in perpetual fear of the day the drawl infects my accent. My biggest fandoms are Star Wars, Redwall, LotR, Harry Potter, The Elder Scrolls, and Doctor Who. My hobbies include drawing, spending slightly unreasonable amounts of time on Wookieepedia, and beating the living daylights out of people with foam-padded sticks, A.K.A. Belegarth.
There, that wasn't so hard. Can't believe it took me half a decade to do. Anyway, thank you very, very kindly for the education and amusement, and I apologize profusely for stalking for so long.
Has someone already poked you? I see they have. Good; all newbies should be poked.
Since that's been done, I'll just leave you your Official Unauthorised PPC Bumper Sticker:
... and wish you a very enjoyable stay here.
hS
Thanks! Now I just need to track down a printer of some description...
I like the Khajiits for Elder Scrolls. As for Redwall, foxes are my favorite vermin, and badgers are my favorite goodbeast.
Khajiit are the best. For Redwall, though, I'm a bit torn. My favorite vermin are definitely stoats (especially Romsca),but for woodlanders I'm torn between otters, squirrels, and badgers.
'Bows politely' I'm not really a member of the PPC 'yet' But I think it would be nice of me to give you a present. Here are some Reese's Pieces and a Auto Shotgun with unlimited ammo. Just in case you have zombie troubles, or Sue troubles, or maybe even 'gasp' Zombie Sue troubles.
Well I guess take care and enjoy yourself, I certainly am.
Everything needed to survive the zombie/Sue apocalypse. Many thanks.
That makes you a PPCer. :)
I'm not a official PPC member, as in I don't have Permission/made any Agents/not done any missions. I guess I am a unofficial PPC member though.
Posting on this Board makes you officially a fully acknowledged member of the PPC Community (unless you are banned for grave misdemeanor, which, to my experience, happens approximately once per year). There is more to being a Protector of the Plot Continuum than getting Permission and writing missions. Having Permission is not even a requirement for being made a Permission Giver.
HG
Oh, really?
And there are Boarders (Hieronymus Graubart especially comes to mind) who don't have Permission but have been around for ages. Is he not an official PPC member?
You're an official PPCer, hun. ;)
Although I'm not sure we can talk about newbie with someone who lured so long on this Board. Anyway, have some black-hole chocolates.
After all, I'm certainly new to posting.
Mm, chocolate.
So you finally decided to come out of the shadows and join us. You probably know almost everyone here better than me, so it's a little strange to welcome someone who's been here for so long. As a reward for joining us have a sonic wrench!
Though I wouldn't say I know as much as recognize most folks here. After lurking for five years it gets a bit difficult to keep track of people beyond just names.
Thanks for the wrench, I've always wanted a sonic device!
I feel weird about welcoming you, since you've technically been here for way longer than I have and you most likely know everyone here much better than I do. But anyway, have a fake dolphin! I look forward to seeing you around.
But I don't think my time around here really counts since I was only lurking. Difficult to get to know people if you never talk to them, aye?
And thankee very much for the dolphin. As clueless as I am about them, they remain my favorite sea-dwelling mammal.
I was completely obsessed with them when I was about six years old, and a decade later I still have an unusual amount of dolphin stuffies, little plastic dolphins, books about dolphins, etc. I haven't really thought about it in a while, but now that we're talking. . . yeah, they remain my favorite sea-dwelling mammal too. What do you like about them?
Though in my case, it never actually faded.
As for why I like dolphins, there's lot of reasons. They're cute, they're smart, I like how they sound, I like how they hunt, and I like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so it's practically obligatory.
Do you plan on becoming involved with the current Shipfest?
I'm just curious. I'm not plotting anything. Nope, just making pleasant conversation. Friendly and inquisitive, that's me.
--Key, who is not a shady character
I'll just be the stick in the mud bystander this time around. If you feel an evil plot coming on, though, by all means include me. I would consider it an honor.
The plot was to ship you with the Board/the PPC/something like that. You know, since you watched it for so long, never quite brave enough to say anything, until one day you screwed up your courage and introduced yourself. . . and were accepted enthusiastically. Adorable, no?
That is an extraordinary idea. You have my full permission to run however far you wish with it.
. . . Okay, that was dumb. Whatever, I'm so excited you like it! Like, multiple-exclamation-points-except-I'm-too-dignified-for-multiple-exclamation-points levels of excited. Thank you for your approval!
I kid, I kid. I'm glad you're excited. If I'd known I'd have this much fun just introducing myself, I would have done it years ago.
You didn't even suspect? Well, you've got plenty of time for having fun ahead of you. (Unless you introduced yourself because you're dying of toenail cancer and want the Board to know how you've loved it before you die, in which case I'm sorry.)
How long do you think we can go with this song before we run out of things to post about?
I was mostly kidding, I always knew it would be fun. It's just that being shipped with a website on my very first post was a bit more enthusiasm than I was expecting. Certainly not complaining, though.
Oh, I get way too enthusiastic about everything. I could probably get through the song three times over, because now I have the idea of getting through the whole song, and I am becoming enthusiastic for it.
I am known for enthusiasm for ideas which are weird, dumb, and sometimes just bad. Not here, yet. But many places, and probably here soon.
Three times might be just a tad overboard, but hey, would probably be fun. Though I think we might start cluttering up the Board if we really did go for three
Enthusiasm is great, and I have no problem with weird ideas. Just look at how much fun we've had already!
I think we're supposed to take ridiculous long threads to the Other Board. . . or T-Board. . . I don't really understand the system. But I'm sure someone will be happy to explain it to us before long.
So, um. . . What are you currently most enthusiastic about?
I think we should probably stop when we get to the second chourus, otherwise I'll have to do the whole song.
I think you're right. Though I don't think that's necessary just yet.
In descending order of enthusiasm, the PPC, archery, and Shadow of Mordor.
^That is my favorite two lines in the entire song. My dad played me this song when I was too young to see the whole movie, and I remembered those two lines until I was thirteen or so and watched the full movie. The books are better, though.
Second chorus sounds good.
. . . I intended to ask you a question about your enthusiasms, but I cannot think of one. . .
The books are amazing. My favorite part is definitely how flying works. "Learning how to throw yourself at the ground, and miss."
That's okay, What are you enthusiastic about right now, enthusiastic one?
That was my dad's favorite part as a kid, so it couldn't be mine, but maybe it would have been mine if it hadn't been his.
I am enthusiastic about the Shipfest! And I asked someone if I could be a Little Sib in House Darjeeling, so I'm nervously waiting to hear back about that. But mostly I've been too swamped with homework to be properly enthusiastic about things.
Are we going to keep this going even now that it's fallen off the front page?
It's a fantastic line. It's one of things I most clearly recall from The Hitchhiker's Guide even though it's been two years since I last read it.
Ah, yes, the Shipfest. I think I've already mentioned how I feel about that, haven't I? Shame about yhe homework, though. Frightfully dull.
House Darjeeling sounds fun. Though I think I might go more for the Parmandili approach (If I ever get around to joining a House, that is). I have a beginner's course for Sindarin I'm going to get around to eventually, and I used to know just about every important starship in Star Wars by manufacturer. I've slacked off a bit since then, but Wookieepedia remains a dear friend of mine.
Of course. Can't stop this close to the chorus.
Have a shovel that digs up lost Let's Play videos!
Speaking of, you're worried about Texas infecting your accent? From one YouTuber I've seen, RoahmMythril, you're more like to get a blend. He was raised in Texas... by Scottish elders.
As to my accent, that's what I'm afraid of, really. My accent probably sounds strange enough as it is. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but I spent most of my time imitating Scottish, English, and German accents, and that's not even getting into the voices like Strong Bad and Homestar Runner.
Please accept this starter Pokémon:-
Iiiiiit's Mienshao!
And your starting item is:-
Glass Cannon from The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth
Glass Cannon is an amazing held item - the 2x damage multiplier you get from it is the biggest in the game - but there are drawbacks. It halves the holder's Defence and Special Defence stats, which means that you have a hard time staying in. On the other hand, Mienshao's defences are pretty ropey anyway, so it's not that big of a deal. You'll want to go all in on the damage build, with Reckless as your ability, but I'd recommend a Jolly nature to maximize your speed since you will not be taking hits. From there, you want High Jump Kick, U-Turn, Knock Off, and Stone Edge, with EVs in Attack and Speed. Finally, just remember to have fun. =]
But then, my knowledge of Pokémon begins and ends with watching the cartoon as a kid many moons ago. Not that many moons, of course, but moons enough to have forgotten much of what little I watched. Still, never too late to learn, thanks for the starter!
I play a bit of competitive, so stuff like what I do gets me thinking deeper about how you can grind out slightly more of an edge on a non-standard Pokémon setup. It may not be socially acceptable, but it is dashed good fun.
For chronic sad acts like me, anyway. YMMV. =]
Boring. The weird stuff is much more fun. Though what I consider fun may leave me a bit biased, see my "beating the living daylights out of people" line.
Ahem, yes. Pokémon isn't quite my thing, (though that could change) but I have been known to read through Wookieepedia by category, particularly in the area of starships, as well as sometimes create Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder characters for fun. Despite the fact that my group broke up years ago. So yes, I understand curious hobbies.
Perhaps if Pokémon one day strikes my fancy I could prevail upon you to show me the ropes?
Welcome! Make yourself comfortable and have a slice of Infinite Pizza!
Also, because I have to:
Fair warning, though, I can be a bit of a pizza snob.
What is that from? It seems ever so slightly familiar.
The badgers quote? A YouTuber by the name of JackSepticEye.
I recognized the animation style of Gravity Falls, though I haven't watched it. The YouTuber, however, I've never heard of. Ah, well, who can keep track of them all? Perhaps he looked familiar because of some half forgotten gif I saw on imgur or tumblr.
Also, I don't know if it was asked before, but what are you preferable pronouns? :3
And my pronouns are male. I threw in "lad" in my introduction as a halfhearted clue to that, but it's easy to miss. I probably should have been more clear, but it already felt a touch wordier than I liked.
Have one of my own shed feathers, along with a working replica of the Golden Snitch and a copy of the One Ring that totally doesn't make you invisible!
Hello! Have a plate of choice cheeses! There's Brie, Sharp Cheddar and a bit of Swiss and Blue. Oh yes, and here's some crackers too. Irrelevant is very sorry if you hate cheese or are lactose intolerant.
Though my taste in cheese is rather plain. No matter, I'll gift some to Wallace and Gromit.
Ah well. Maybe just cheese sticks next time. I wonder what would happen if someone mixed Bleepirin with cheese.
Maybe both.
Have a Salad V noggle.
I'm not quite certain I understand, but thanks!
Alad V is a character in WARFRAME. Thing is, his name is pronounced "a-LAHD" (rhymes with "salad"), not "AH-lad" like you'd expect; thence, the fandom calls him "Salad".
I've never played Warframe, but I've been tempted to try it.
The lore's pretty interesting and we've been getting more of it lately. The latest update (u18.5) landed yesterday and brought lotsa graphical improvements.
Warframe's main problem is that it's not newbie-friendly. However, it has a very good wiki that should be read often and most people are glad to help newbies.
I'm a sucker for good lore, and steep learning curves don't really bother me. I've got nothing but time.
I shall subvert my usual gift today, since I'm giving a A replica of the Corrupt!Shadowreaper of Doom. Note: I am not responsible for any unhallowed whispers, influences of the mind, and the urge to shout DOOOM whenever a Friday the 13th comes around.
2nd Note: This plays a part in how I make my scones.
You can never go wrong with doom and gloomy axes. I think I'll keep this one in the attic, though. If I'm going to be shouting "doom!" I'll do it when I please, not before.
I may press you for that scone recipe, however.
Welcome to the board, and all that stuff.
I would be more than fearful towards Texanism if I were you, by the way, because the only way I can read 'high time' is with the voice that is essentially cowboy blackface.
It's already infected your idioms. I think it might be too late.
My gift upon you is: the theoretical concept of cancer rates in Uganda.
I'm sure you can use it better than I can.
Pardner.
I'm fairly certain I picked it ip from a Badger in Redwall once upon a time. All the same, I am determined to make my escape before "Y'all" enters my vocabulary.
Thank you, I think. I'll find a place for it in the back room.
Since you covered my usual questions, just have this plate of welcome SPaGhetti!
*high fives* Welcome aBoard, fellow Potterhead and Whovian!
Tasty.
Always nice to meet a fellow fan! Who's your favorite Doctor? What House are you in?
Ten is my favorite New Who Doctor, Four Classic. Though Hartnell and Eccleston have a special place in my hearts since they were my firsts. :)
And Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart! Their daring, nerve, and chivalry set Gryffindors apart!
Yourself?
Nine was my first, so I'll always be fond of him, but Ten is my absolute favorite. My favorite Classic Who is definitely Four. Though I do hold a certain fondness for Five, despite how few of his episodes I've seen.
As for my House, Hufflepuff! Err, probably. It's a bit unclear some days.
