The main ones I've seen, in general potato salad territory, are white (because of...mayonnaise, or something?) and orange (no, I don't remember why). Also, I'm now theorizing that this is something that came over from Eastern Europe...though you never know.

The only celebration where pigging out is allowed... required even! It's the last Thursday before Lent and the one thing that everyone associates with that day is doughnuts! There is a difference, however. Polish doughnuts are deep-fried balls of dough with filling.
So, to celebrate, I'm giving our virtual doughnuts! You have some choice between fillings: rose petal jam, vanilla pudding, chocolate, and glitter! :D
Is this an actual thing? Cause there is Mardi Gras,which is on the 9th of the month.
It's a Fat Tuesday not a fat Thursday.
And I was just asking because I didn't know it existed. Google just gave me doughnut places.
To me, at least, it sounded like "what? Na, that's not a thing since it's not what I know". I'm glad this isn't the case.

Last $DAYOFTHEWEEK before Lent kicks off. Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and (one assumes) Fat Thursday all have one major purpose: getting rid of all the food that can't keep for forty days with medieval refrigeration technology before you go on a fast. It's a festival and, if I remember right, not originally a holy day. Strictly speaking.
Actually, hold on. PAGING ALLEB. Or any of the other members of the Jesus fandom, actually. Shed a bit of light?
I am indeed a member of the Jesus fandom, but I know nothing at all of holy days (besides, ya know, Easter and such), or any non-Protestant traditions. Raised in a Nazarene church-- sorry. However, I do know that when Baptists meet, they eat, and that at any church potluck there will be at least two potato salads of differing colors.

Sometimes a combination of both. I don't think I've seen too much white potato salad-- it's probably the mayonnaise, but I've never actually made it, so I don't know.
There's always a color difference between two bowls, though. One salad will look normal, but the other has that unsettling green tinge. I usually get some of both, for science. And because I love potato salad.

I think the greenish types have had contact with pickles in some way-- pickles are all well and good, but they do not belong in potato salads. It makes them too sweet. What's the white kind taste like?

Although that implies that they use sweet pickles, which, just, yuck, in my opinion. Pickles are supposed to be *sour*, no?
The white kind...hmm. Like cold potato, celery, tiny bits of crunchy sour pickles, and...a little bit creamy, I guess? Nothing in it is all that soft, but there's a bit of a cream taste to it from the mayonnaise or whatever it is. That's how I remember it, anyway; haven't had it for most of a year now, I think, as my family doesn't make it.

Most of the ones I've had haven't had celery; interesting. They're usually very creamy, and very fatty. This is a most important scientific topic. ^_^ Now I really want some potato salad.

Why'd you have to give my husband glitter, though? We still haven't gotten it out of the carpet from Christmas. Heck, I found a piece on my cat the other day. Now we'll never see the end of it.

Which is actually next week, now that you mention it. That said, I am more than willing to have a Paczki any day of the week. Alas, there are no traditional plum filled. I guess I'll take a glitter.
