Yes, I'm back with another dose of the weekly news and views.
Please remember that, when it comes to the state of the world, not everyone will agree with you. You're free to state, discuss, and defend your viewpoint (provided it does not violate the Constitution), but please don't use that fact to attack others.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE it's here it's here it's finally here.
Ahem.
The standalone Beren and Luthien novel went on sale yesterday. This is the book I have been longing to see ever since they announced the Children of Hurin, ten years ago. I was certain it would never get made - that the stories were too fragmentary to pull it off. But it was! And it's out! And that's amazing! Now all we need is a Fall of Gondolin novel...
Silly News
(The sun & the troll)
Next year, NASA will be shooting the sun. Or rather, they will be sending a probe - now named the Parker Solar Probe - closer to the sun than we've ever sent anything before, dropping into the corona (atmosphere) of our star. Nicola Fox, apparently a very quotable NASA scientist, described it as "the coolest, hottest mission under the Sun".
Meanwhile, back on Earth, Jeremy Corbyn is a huge troll. After weeks of saying he wouldn't attend the televised debate in advance of the UK General Election unless Theresa May (the Prime Minister) did, he announced on the afternoon of the debate that he would be showing up after all.
... which meant he, and everyone else, could rag on Ms. May for her decision not to come. "...where is Theresa May, what happened to her?" "The first rule of leadership is to show up."

We're less than a week away from the UK General Election, and what in the name of Cleisthenes is going on in the polls? I have never seen such a massive spike in one party's ratings. I mean, I'm happy the Labour Party (left-wing) is gaining ground on the Conservatives (right-wing, the government)... but I don't think I really believe it.
Or is this just the world we live in now? It happened with Trump, it happened with Brexit, it happened with Jeremy Corbyn leading Labour, it happened with the French election... did someone push a button somewhere that means the less-likely candidate will always win now?
Not News
While driving Kaitlyn to work this morning, we saw these on a lorry next to us. I didn't know this sort of thing actually existed! It's like something out of Animaniacs.
Finally, I'm going to be taking a break from the Board during June (and I believe Neshomeh is, too). It's been a stressful few months, and I need a rest. Hopefully I can dig out some of these half-finished projects and get something completed... there will be a Plort thread when I get back, so don't panic about that. :)
I'll hang around on this thread for a couple of days for when something interesting comes up, but after that I won't be posting or reading until July. Iximaz, if the Sunflower Cup wraps up in the next month (^_~) let me know who won, and I'll send you the certificates.

I can't wait to see the other Boarders' reactions to that. I showed it to my dad once and he was really confused. :P

Reaction to the Fandom News:
Given the names, I'm pretty sure I'm right in saying: MORE TOLKIEN-TYPE STUFF?! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO-
Reaction to the Silly News:
Oh gosh the puns. Sun puns. Oh no. Also, that's pretty dang cool! And as for the troll... I'm not sure what to say here, lol.
Reaction to the Serious News:
Maybe it's the Ironic Overpower, who knows. Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the IO. :P
Reaction to the Not News:
Wonder what they're using that stuff for...
Reaction to hS going for a while:
I completely understand that kind of logic. Stress and productivity drain were two of the main reasons why I left Scratch, so all I can say is I hope you have a good time and get some good work done. Good luck and farewell for now.

Breaking news: sun hostage attempt fails by

NASA's historic attempt to hold the sun hostage at gunpoint has, just a few hours ago, ended in failure, as the sun, unmoved by their megaphone-assisted threats and pointed Parker Solar Probes, simply disappeared over the horizon, leaving nothing behind but quickly fading purple marks on the few clouds in the sky.
'It really was the last thing we were expecting - we never thought we'd see that kind of action coming from the sun,' said John NASA, current CEO of NASA. 'I mean, seriously, what the heck's going on, back there? I was really caught by surprise! I was all "hey, what's it doing?!" It just kind of sunk down, out of nowhere for no reason! It makes no sense! What would a sun even be doing down there?'
When asked to describe the sun's unruly and unexpected behaviour, NASA gunholder, Rick Rocketman, described the celestial object as 'One loose cannon.'
'We're still not sure how it did it, but we suspect corporate espionage, spying, terrorism, corruption amongst our politicians, and quirky hijinks. I don't want to point any fingers, but I can't be the only one who noticed that the moon just so happened to appear, right after the sun's unlikely escape?' theorised John NASA, clasping his hands into fists so hard they went white in an attempt to make sure none of the fingers pointed.
When asked about his plans to correct this catastrophic failure, John NASA only had this quote to offer: 'The issue of holding the sun hostage at gunpoint for three thousand and fifty-three dollars and five Overwatch Loot Boxes under threat of completely destroying it and all life in our solar system is a complex and confusing issue. But we do have one solution: we shoot it twice.'
((So this is a weird, somewhat experimental thing. Not done it before, myself, anyhow. Might do it more, if it's not horrific tripe everyone hates?)) -

Why!? Why in the heck would you do that!?
Anyway, I've been... okay. Needed to take a break away from here, but... I'll be posting something else on the board soon. Let's just say I may require your character-writing services soon, PPC! -

Over here.
As I pointed out to The Random Stranger, all the images except the last two (which I linked there) are in the articles they refer to. And as I pointed out to KittyEden, this is a Photobucket/Board issue, not something I can fix. I'm sorry that so many people are having trouble with them, but I genuinely am not able to do anything about it.

South Thanet MP Craig Mackinlay (Con) charged with electoral overspending.
This is my constituency. The local Tories have all been bent as nine-bob notes for years (his predecessor, Laura Sandys, resigned rather than face investigation into some deeply dodgy property deals), and I've been seeing more and more Vote Labour signs in the local area. We might just take it back from the Tories, and I say take it back because this used to be Stephen Ladyman's constituency under the Blair and Brown governments before the Tory councils gerrymandered all the districts into Tory-voting ones through a series of boundary redraws the likes of which are normally only seen in North Carolina.
Raushan Ara, we are with you. Please, PLEASE let Nasty Nigel's attempted constituency go instead to an Asian woman. Please. -

Partly because I'm planning an actual vacation the last week of June, so it seems like a good time, but also what hS said. I was having this phenomenal writing streak before all the drama broke out, and I'd like to get back to that.
So, if at some point I agreed to co-write with you, beta something for you, or anything of that nature, now would be a really great time to poke me about it over e-mail (neshomeh dot soul at the gmail). I plan to try and make a little time for everybody.
I'll still be doing the Mailbox Game, too, because that's fun. {= )
(Also, eeee, Beren and Luthien! I know what I want for my birthday!)

P.S. The images were broken for me the first time I looked, but then they worked. I have no idea why. -

...I did not expect to see the phrase "next year, NASA will be shooting the sun" in any context, ever. But the universe tends to surprise me in that way. :P
Have a pleasant break, hS- it's important to take care of your mental healthsays the person who systematically wrecks her own on a near-daily basisnah but in all seriousness, I wish you all the best in getting your projects done. We'll take good care of the Board while you're gone- it'll be barely dented by the time you get back! -

Unfortunately I can't make them fix it. :(
Alternately, the Board has been loading slowly for me today, so there may be a problem at our end. Regardless, I can confirm that there are images, and they're lovely. ^_^
