It turns out it's not actually in New Caledonia...

Seriously, 'A South Pacific island, shown on marine charts and world maps as well as on Google Earth and Google Maps, does not exist, Australian scientists say.' That's an SEP field at work if I ever saw one.
(My assumption is that it was just a glitch in the G'Earth picture... still, it's pretty awesome that we still don't know everything about the Earth's landmasses. Dinotopia could still be out there!!1)

It looks like it could possibly be a shadow from the underwater ridge there. Or a garbage berm. Or it could be that the flowers forgot to remove the image from one of the google earth satellites...
Does this mean that places like Atlantis and Dinotopia really exist? One can hope...
I move to make this official, because it is beautiful.
Of course, that would require updating information and/or all kinds of confusing explanations of why we call it New Caledonia when it actually isn't... though "Sandy Island" isn't much of a name...

We call it New Caledonia because New Caledonia sounds better than the Generic-sounding 'Sandy Island'.
I also move to make it official,and maybe we call it New Caledonia because it's a fun name to say / it's the nearest landmass and the Flowers That Be didn't want to go to the effort of making up a new name?

Or it could be an ancient civilization of supernatural beings who have discovered magic and used it in unison with futuristic technology, this creating a mystical cyberpunk island where cyborgs and Androids are the norm, and where the ruling Great and Indisputable Superior Elder Council communicate through mental links and holographic computer systems.

Those scientists who went there were either
a) brainwashed with the aforementioned telepathy to believe that the island didn't exist
or
b) killed and replaced with androids that will infiltrate our society and turn us all into cyborgs
or
c) turned into cyborgs, but with implants so small we won't realize they're cyborgs until one of them displays enhanced abilities like becoming a human computer.
Take your pick.
I went more of a Deus Ex meets Portal 2 route, myself.
Scientists go to island, all are killed except a select few who are augmented and used as test subjects for weaponized experimentation.

This is a discovered island which has been determined to actually consist of 4,500ft of water.
So either it's not really there, or that's one heck of an SEP field...
