It turns out it's not actually in New Caledonia...
It's about 200 miles west of it
Seriously, 'A South Pacific island, shown on marine charts and world maps as well as on Google Earth and Google Maps, does not exist, Australian scientists say.' That's an SEP field at work if I ever saw one.
(My assumption is that it was just a glitch in the G'Earth picture... still, it's pretty awesome that we still don't know everything about the Earth's landmasses. Dinotopia could still be out there!!1)

Of course dinotopia is out there, my agents would know if it wasn't. :)
It looks like it could possibly be a shadow from the underwater ridge there. Or a garbage berm. Or it could be that the flowers forgot to remove the image from one of the google earth satellites... -

I move to make this official, because it is beautiful.
Of course, that would require updating information and/or all kinds of confusing explanations of why we call it New Caledonia when it actually isn't... though "Sandy Island" isn't much of a name...

A Star Trek episode, which, to make a long episode short, ends with the characters creating a holographic environment inside a holographic environment, then stepping out out of both and wondering what is real, since the simulations were simulations of the ship.

It could be Dinotopia...

Those scientists who went there were either
a) brainwashed with the aforementioned telepathy to believe that the island didn't exist
or
b) killed and replaced with androids that will infiltrate our society and turn us all into cyborgs
or
c) turned into cyborgs, but with implants so small we won't realize they're cyborgs until one of them displays enhanced abilities like becoming a human computer.

I went more of a Deus Ex meets Portal 2 route, myself.
Scientists go to island, all are killed except a select few who are augmented and used as test subjects for weaponized experimentation.
