Important note: content warning for material that could be distressing for survivors of childhood sexual assault in the very last paragraph of this post. It’s nothing remotely graphic or counter to Board rules - just the legal definition of a term - but far better to over-warn than under-warn.

Personally, I switched over to AO3 (the Archive Of Our Own, archiveofourown.org) years ago, and haven’t touched the Pit of Voles the Den of Weasels fanfiction.net in years. It is (mostly) invite-only - you can also request an invite directly, though I don’t know how long that takes.

I believe, though, they gave every account something like nine invites in response to the Tumblr apocalypse, so if anyone wants an invite, hit me up.

Personally, I’ve found that the average ‘fic quality is much higher than on e.g. ff.net; there’s probably some bias there, since I exclusively find new fic by going through the bookmarks of authors whose ‘fic I like. Even so, I’ve never seen anything as bad as you can find on ff.net (by which, to be clear, I mean that the lowest-quality ‘fic I see on AO3 is still much better than the lowest-quality ‘fic on Flickr.net).

AO3 is also very explicitly a safe space to post anything and everything - they have rules about user conduct, but IIRC the only explicitly-forbidden content is defined by law (e.g. no child pornography, under the legal definition thereof as photographic or video depictions of children in sexual situations).
