Calibre is a free epub reader for Mac/Windows/Linux, and it's also a library manager designed to handle transfer to/from a Kindle, Nook, etc. Some PDF readers also work. There are also add-ons that let you read epubs in your web browser (because, by the way, an epub is just a renamed .zip with html inside, and a few extra files with some additional information).

On mobile, any ebook reader you have will probably accept epub at this point, and most phones come with software that can read epubs (google play books, ibooks, etc). On Android, I actually use Libera Reader, which provides an e-reader like interface that I think is pretty nice, although your mileage my vary.
