Me, I have a thing against angelic-child characters... why? Because my first Mary Sue was one of them. There's a reason most authors here have sporked their own hilariously bad first efforts.

...I think that would disqualify most if not all creative endeavours. It would certainly have disqualified me. Very few people start out making amazing, flawless stuff right away. Becoming better is a sure thing, but only if you keep it up. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. Mimicking things you love is the absolute first step for a lot of people, that later go on to find their own voice.

On its best days, the whole point of the PPC is to say "this is what you've done badly, you can do better". The fact that all of us have grown in that exact way is proof that it is possible, if you put the effort in.

We're not going to run you out of town for having written stuff in a genre/style you now hate. We've all done stuff like that before. What matters more is that you don't be too hard on yourself for it and just strive to write better by whatever new yardstick of quality you choose.
