LotR is a fairly high-level reading, too, so you'd think they'd have a decent grasp of how writing works.
On the other hand, their grammar/spelling skills have no bearing on their actual ability to /write/, keep people in character, or any of the many, many factors that create goodfic.
For bizarre pairings, that tops the list, although I think the Harry/Basilisk is a close second. (I did meet someone who shipped Dobby/Giant Squid, but that was only because "The fandom is that f---ed up and you know it.") -
