I wouldn't think he'd be allowed, no. But if it was in the end credits then he wasn't the one using it, it was the program producers/person in charge of credits.

Few weeks ago there was a documentary on TV where he told about his Alzheimers, and in the end credits it seemed to say: Sir Terry Pratchett.
Actually, on my screen it said (I don't have wide screen and lose some information on the sides):

He was on the New Year's Honours List, and was offically knighted on Wednesday. It's not official 'til you're actually knighted by the Queen.

I could see the whole thing of it. If it was the last leg of the M, I would have been more likely to confuse it with an l.
