My dad introduced me to them, as well as Star Wars, and pretty much every movie I've watched and actually *liked*. As for the books, I'll probably make another attempt on the Silmarillion(sp?) some time soon, since I almost made it through that one before the shiny other book caught my eye.

but I haven't actually read the lord of the Rings trilogy. Blasphemy, I know, but I keep getting distracted by other shiny stuffs, and at least I don't write fic for it. I *do* usually know LOTR badfic when I see it, though, and I've picked up a fair amount from reading missions. I still wouldn't want to risk messing up with my facts on an MST.
