The Maiden's Kiss being caused by drugging kids with bond enhancing love potions is a commentary on how some Purityworld fics sandblast off all the personality from a character to make them fit into the ship du jour for the fic. The journey to make Bellatrix Lestrange fall for Lily Evans organically would take too long and force Bellatrix to deconstruct blood supremacy (Mother Magic forbid!) so let's speedrun it with the power of authorial fiat love potions! It's totally romantic and very feminist!

A couple of years back I solidly would've said Harry is a Dragon, and That's Okay, a fic I enjoyed so much I wrote a 'mission' into it that was really more of a spotlight of 'hey, this joke premise is actually good' turned into an in-universe Intel miscommunication. I think it's a contender for the best mission I've written. The fic itself is really just 'Harry Potter becomes a dragon for no apparent reason,' simple as that, but the author manages to get so much mileage out of the premise. The only nitpicks I really have about it in hindsight are that it starts to drag a little near the end and it has an incredible length of a 3/4 million words, but it's still quite good, and I'm sure the length appeals to others more than me.

Recently, though, I finally found another that might have taken its throne for me: On the Fringes, an XCOM fic about a human and Viper trying to survive the aftermath of the War for Liberation (XCOM 2's canon events). It's honestly so much better than I was expecting going into it, but fair warning that it is a romance fic, so it dips solidly into the NSFW for a single chapter. It's a solid, novel-length story, despite it being, well, human-on-giant-alien-snake-with-arms romance, and I can definitely see why it's the highest-kudos XCOM fanfic on Ao3. Honestly, if I knew nothing about XCOM, it does such a good time introducing the setting and world that I could probably mistake it for an actual published book (complimentary). Who knows, if time works out right on my end, I might find a way to give it some relevancy in my upcoming ESAS spinoff...

Farscape is intensely character-driven, featuring a supporting cast who all have misdeeds (real or perceived) in their past and one (1) white dude who is completely out of his depth, but fortunately not quite as dumb as he looks. Their motives in the beginning are entirely selfish: escape captivity, survive, and go home. They're not out to explore the galaxy, and they're not out to take down a tyrannical superpower. Some of that happens, but only when there's no other option. {= P

I will say, it's a late 90s/early aughts show, so be prepared for some period-typical cringe here and there. A couple episodes in season 1 particularly are... not great. ^_^; (No one, and I mean literally no one, likes 1.14, "Jeremiah Crichton.") But nothing is perfect. Get to the end of season 1, and it goes from being generally above average to being generally amazing.

Come for the amazing Henson creatures, stay for the clever trope subversions, wacky humor, and lovable flawed heroes. {= )

I remember a while back hearing that they weren't really maintaining the site as much as in its heyday. So if you got this stuff recently, chances are that that's the reason why you've got more hoops to jump through.

Seriously, just yesterday I got a PM that turned out to be an art commission scam, and to report that I had to write a mail to support because there is no on-site report function for PMs (despite the big "unsolicited PMs will get you banned" PSA you get in your inbox).

Apparently this is also a widespread issue that's going as far back as September at least, and the only reason I had not been hit yet is likely because my account has been pretty much inactive since 2018.

It was more rigorously enforced in the earlier years. It’s part of why Suedom got removed from FFN, because they said it was an “interactive” fic.

Since it seems like you're interested in OFUs, which ones have you read so far? At least OFUM, the original, I hope? Would you like some recommendations beyond that?

Typically the OFU sends a side character staff member to deliver the letter. The prospective student fills out the form and is then transported after falling asleep. In terms of the fic itself, the OFU writer puts a form in the first chapter that reviewers fill out to submit their student characters. For those who posted on FFN, this means making it clear that fic isn’t interactive—the readers have no control over what their characters do—because that violates FFN terms of service.

What is the procedure for getting badfic writers to OFU's? Do the Flowers have agents violently kidnap them? If so, is there a specific group for that? Do they use some kind of teleportation technology? Or do they just send the writer an email?

on account of the cover and interior illustrations for the hardcover not being done yet. I... suspect paperbacka might have gone out - I can check.

(And to be fair this is co-author credit on some self-published sci-fi so ... decently nominal as far as being published goes, but still!)
