One of Harrison's immediate successors, for example, took the unprecedented step of farming out the routine work in his precision watches to factory workers, only doing the fiddly bits himself. That speaks of someone with very much the confidence you're describing: he knew his method worked, and was even willing to let other people do part of the work, rather than 'showing his skill' by doing everything himself.

(I've just finished rereading the book, and this jumped right out at me in the context of your post.)
