I don't always post about it, but this year I'm turning 35, which feels like a significant number. It's also happening at a time when the world is going through massive upheaval, between the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and widespread protests in support of Black lives, both of which bear remembering.

For that reason, I'm using my platform here to ask you to consider marking this occasion by making a donation to a worthy cause. I would suggest the Southern Poverty Law Center, Black Lives Matter, or the Poor People's Campaign.

Don't feel bad if you are a student or otherwise have no disposable income. There are other ways to support justice and equal rights. It starts by simply being aware of systemic racism and of your own privilege, if you're white, to live your life not having to worry about it unless you choose to. Please fight systemic injustice by choosing to hear the voices around you crying for equal treatment. Please choose to care.

I hope you had a wonderful day, and I wish you...well, it feels a bit different than usual, wishing someone a happy, healthy, and successful year ahead, but...I think I'll do it anyway, and add innerly peaceful into the mix. There are probably very few people in the world right now who couldn't do with a bit of that from time to time.

On a lighter note: you are very much not a newbie, but I hereby present you with my traditional newbie gift of a bar of Swiss Bleepolate, for your amusement. :P

Yes, please donate if you can. But, as Neshomeh said, there are ways to help even without money. Such as, for example, watching this video! All of the revenue from ads and the like are donated to organizations like the ones above (but don't watch it over and over; YouTube will mark it as spam).

Edited to add: It's slightly infuriating to encounter ads on this video from old white men droning on and on about how racism isn't really a problem and if there IS a problem it's definitely not their fault, but since their marketing dollars are going to a good cause, I will grit my teeth and bear it.

Protip: Listen to Black people about what is or isn't a problem for Black people, not the old white men.
