TouRabu fandom has many badfic, but I've yet to see one that infuriated me as much as this one. The Sue is abusive and tyrannical and has absolutely no empathy, and that's not to mention the utter Bad History with the Sue's being the granddaughter of a historical figure that's supposes to have been dead for three centuries as of her supposed time, among other things. Prepare bite guards and helmets for the epic rage fest to come, and you may wanna read my DS sporked version to stave off the anger.

Now, I'm not knowledgeable in the Millionaire Detective - Balance: UNLIMITED fandom beyond bits and pieces of info from my sister who is a fan of the series, but damn does this fic get my Japanology student instincts ticked off. In short, the whole fic is about tipping and the café one of the characters works at has a friggin' tip jar, forgetting that canon is set in Japan and the fic doesn't say otherwise. I repeat: there is no such thing as tipping in Japanese culture; in fact, tipping might be a purely American thing. Other than that, the same character writes another character's name in "capital fonts", never mind that there's no such thing as capitalization in the Japanese language. It's a culturally inaccurate mess.

It's not a purely American thing, though, no. It's not even a purely North American thing. I'm not sure, but I think I may have seen it in at least historical British novels, and at least a similar idea in Eastern lands; it's also a modern concept in Israel for sure, primarily in restaurants. I think possibly also in taxis, though I could be wrong. It could potentially have migrated to Israel from America, of course; not really my area of knowledge.
At any rate: tipping exists outside of the US (and outside of Canada, where it is also very, very much a thing), and it's interesting that it isn't a thing in Japan. I wonder why.

You tip waiters and waitresses over here. It's just considerably less than in the US (10% is average) because we actually pay people a living wage... sort of. Taxi drivers too, sometimes.
It's just a lot more optional, and you don't tip random other folk.

There were definitely multiple situations where we were going to tip and were told not to by the staff. I'm a little hazy on the details however. It was a while ago.

So the way of tipping I know (from my parents, who are Northern English) is to just leave the money on the table unless the restaurant either has a tip pot (Nando's, and I think some pubs) or allows tipping as part of the bill (some restaurants). I can't think of a time when the staff would be /able/ to say no, except when tipping takeaway delivery people - and they just say thanks. :)
What I'm trying to ask is, what was your tipping method, since it's clearly quite different?

I think it might have been about tipping non-waitstaff? Or something? Or maybe it was something else? I'm... confused. Honestly, I really don't know.

It's a reader-insert, it's Suey, it gets a lot of canon characters wrong, it gets Japanese culture wrong a lot, and most importantly it promotes a ton of problematic ideas about relationships. Not only that, it's inexplicably crossed over with Tokyo Ghoul, Coco, Kimetsu no Yaiba and Black Butler – keep in mind Onmyōji is set in Heian period Japan. Fic is here
