The PPC Multiversal Atlas & Timeline Map by Huinesoron on 2022-05-30 16:43:53 UTC Writing Plug Reply

Much to my chagrin, the main source texts on Multiverse Theory are lost due to Google (and incidentally, if anyone has a copy of either "Time and Motion Study" or any of the articles from DAS-JIVE, I would be very grateful). Rather than letting that get me down, though, and prompted by the realisation that the Takedown of TOS and the Mirror Multiverse appeared on the very same day, I have spent the last week massively expanding the Multiversal Atlas and Timeline List that used to be contained in those documents.

Multiversal Atlas

Containing descriptions and illustrations (yes, really) of all 13 known multiverses, along with an outline of the current theories on their formation and relations. Also links to the source material for each of them, and to every known contact between multiverses.

Timeline Map

Somewhat less developed, but contains a list of every alternate PPC timeline I'm aware of, with links and brief details. Also a map of how they've all branched off - and yes, the World Without Suvians is in there!

And this is the part where I ask for help! Please reply and let me know (& give links please!) if you are aware of a published story, illustration, or RP showing that I've missed one of the following:

Another PPC Multiverse. Plort and other Boarder AUs don't count (ie, agents should be people, and Boarders shouldn't be.)*
A crossover or contact between two multiverses.
An alternate Prime PPC timeline. Badfic Games and Shipfests don't count. I've also currently excluded agentshipping stories, because I reckon they're either Prime Timeline or Shipverse. The jury is still out.

(*Astute readers will see that I've broken this rule once, to make use of the Gym Leader AU. I could make a case for this, but ultimately I just wanted to. ^_~)

hS, this is fantastic! I'm sorry we lost the original, but I promise this is even better. I especially love the implication that multiverse crossovers can beget further multiverses, which should make for lots of fun as future stories and RPs unfold and produce further opportunities for ideas and connections!

There's one other timeline I know of, although it's only a minor one, and rather unpleasant. It's the one where Lorac killed Alec's wife and son, and was cryogenically frozen as punishment. Alec and Teena then had kids together. It has exactly one crossing point per direction! Relevant links are here (NSFW, mention of rape) and here. The Cold Storage isn't something we have in the prime timeline, but since there's no indication of anyone besides Lorac being there, it's easy enough to surmise the facility was created as a result of Lorac's crime, and not that this is some crazy police state timeline.

- Anything from this thread; none of the concepts, however fascinating, are 'narrative' enough to count.
- The Myths of the PPC. Very tempting, but ultimately they're meant to be warped versions of actual events, not different versions which actually happened.
- The Musicalverse. I was sorely tempted by this one. It even has a glimpse at World One, if you discount Huinesoron being called an elf (or accept that I just am one). But again, it's an adaptation of the actual events, not a separate world where J&A just sing a lot.

Which makes for two "agents as normal people" AUs. I suspect the theorists are trying to come up with some way the Philharmonic and PPC High share a Multiverse, but I'm not sure they'll pull it off.

Since there are no solid Sparks left over, I'll have to tuck it on the end with no Spark for now. Time to figure out how to draw a concert harp...

On reading the RP it looks like most people treated it as "if your Prime agents joined an orchestra". So that wouldn't count - it's just a possibly-AU happening in HQ.

I thought the original concept was “what if the PPC was an orchestra”, but if it’s “what if your agents joined an orchestra in the Prime” then yeah, probably semi-AU unless we’re about to get someone canonically in a PPC orchestra. ~~Where do they even get the time?~~

In this reply I worked through the idea of the PPC as existing across time and transcending any one incarnation; I hit at least three points in the Medieval period. But that model is not seriously considered by DAS and the theorists.

Back in late 2019 (the search bar puts the peak of that sort of thing at August-October) #rudis in Discord featured a bunch of going-on related to Greystone Mountain - the PPC AU where just about everyone is dragons. Falling into the prime/dragon HQ from the other side happened in both directions.

The main culprit appears to have been Delta, but a bunch of lolks had some dragon!agents (I am definitely seeing Moons and myself pop up a lot in what logs I can easily jump to)

Does there happen to be a non-Discord log of it? I'm wary of declaring something canon based on a chat transcript that isn't publically accessible, and doubly wary of trying to write an entry when, uh, I've never seen it. ^_^

(I'm assuming it's 'everyone is dragons' rather than eg 'everyone is Pernese dragons'; it'd be a lot easier for me to write a Fandemonium entry for Greystone, but it sounds like this is a full separate multiverse.)

No one's written in the setting outside of RPs (yet (though now I'm contemplating what would make sense)) and the getting of the logs would need to be done the annoying way - finding them, copy pasting, cleaning up the OOC tags, and poking folks to ensure they don't mind their old RPs being a smidge more searchable.

(And on a highly tangential note, what are your thoughts about mirroring some core PPC stuff, like TOS, onto plotprotectors.org ? It'd be a Small Configuration Update (tm) or less to add a /stories directory or something and stick arbitrary HTML under it)

Do you (= you, collectively, the Discord-users) consider Discord RPs canonical? Or do you see them more as places to play with ideas and see whether they're worth using in stories? I have no idea how you operate, but I know a lot of "informal RP" settings treat it as a kind of extra-canonical space.

If you (= as above) would hold them up as canon, then... well, I'm still not comfortable with chunks of PPC canon being locked away in the Discord, but I would bite my tongue and add this to the Atlas. It would be helpful if someone could put together a more detailed profile on it first - if I'm doing it, I'd rather do it right.

(Re: mirroring - I... don't mind? As long as you don't break or overload the site? I won't be offended if you rehost things that I've archived, if that's what you're asking. I also can't exactly help with it, if that's what you're asking.)

They're fun places to throw around ideas, but they're very difficult to discover after the fact. We've also never enforced a Permission boundary, and obviously they're very hard to beta-read and edit. I believe (don't quote me) that some things have been canonized, either in reference or in actuality, but that's a thing that's been done after the fact.

The interlude I co-wrote with Hidaney is actually a slightly edited version of an RP we did in the Discord. I thought it was good enough to be canon, so I asked them if they minded if I wanted to declare it canon, edit it a bit, and put it up on my AO3 account. They agreed.

Mostly playing with agent ideas (I did it with Val before fully integrating her with CPP) or concepts. I never really considered it canon and wouldn't like to consider them canonical, if that makes sense.

A lot of my RP there is jagged and really early forms of characters. If we were making the RPs canon, I think we should have a choice on which RPs (if any) are canon and copy them over. I don't like the idea of the RPs being locked away from public as well.

I've definitely used chat RP to play with ideas and get a feel for characters, same as one might use RP threes on the Board. I've generally operated under the assumption that things in RPs (both chat or Board) aren't canon unless someone actively makes it so (for example, by saying it's canon for their spinoff or, more loosely, by referencing the events of the RP in something they publish)

(And for an example of where the lack of canonicity helps - Farah used to have a lot more to angst about until I decided it was all a bit much and turned it down to one dead mentor-y aunt)

My thought process leading to the initial post was "Hey, hS is making an AU list, cool! And wasn't there that dragon AU that we messed with a few years back? I should mention it."

Since all that happened in chat RPs (which are both generally non-canon and harder to canonicalize due to not being on the fully public internet), it probably isn't a good fit for your list as it stands.

The options I can think of for clearing this up are a combination of
- Pulling out some of those RPs if the people involved are cool with it so there's something to reference
- Actually writing something in the setting so there's a document to point to.
Both of those will take time, though on the writing front, a short interlude where Peregrin hops multiverses and meets dragon!Peregrin is starting to take shape in my brain - I'll keep the Board posted if it turns into actual writing.

I've got a pile of art and Google doc RP transcripts for a mountain of Jacques AUs that Zing and I used to develop Liu Siyuan and his homeworld. But those are highly character-centred and don't necessarily affect the rest of the PPC. Some of them don't even have the PPC in it since they take place solely in LSY's home continuum.

Jacques is a funny sort of character for this, too. He's a Jack Harkness replacement, which would roughly make him an AU Jack Harkness by default, so an AU of Jacques is like an AU of an AU. But I do think Zing has plans to make Jacques meet his AU counterparts, one of which is the dragon one, so...

And by "otherwise stated", I mean something along the lines of "copied into a doc and cleaned up a little, and posted with the permission of everyone involved." That or just having chunks or elements of it worked into an interlude or mission or whatever else. I did a fair amount of RPing on the PPC discord back in the day, and it was always either for fun or to develop characters (or both, really) by playing around with them or versions of them. This is why there's an orchestra of Jacqueses to begin with: I was trying to get a better handle on his character, and it turned out a, AUs were very good (and fun) for that, and b, he somehow lends himself extremely well to AUs. But absolutely none of that should be assumed to be canon unless actually stated to be, especially since so much of it is AUs. Some of them I'd be happy to have as canonical (official?) AUs! But for the most part, they currently absolutely are not.

Re: Jacques meeting his AU counterparts, this was an idea I had (and started writing) in 2020, as a silly thing to entertain us all with. I did, of course, proceed to get busy, and then very busy, so ultimately I have 3-4 docs, none of them finished, some started in 2021 and even 2022...hopefully I'll eventually be able to post some or all of them. We'll see. (Of course, the general idea that Jacques should meet his AUs predates 2020, but that was when I finally found a viable concept for how.) Currently, none of the docs include a dragon AU Jacques (I'll confess, I haven't gone far enough into this thread to actually know which one we're talking about, though I expect it's the one where The PPC is Dragons) (ETA: yup, it's the one I was thinking of), and I'm not sure I actually plan to write one with that AU in play, but in theory, who knows. Maybe it could work as a very short piece?

You're right: the first of the Jacques-meeting-his-AUs stories actually does feature the Potterverse counterpart! Well. One of them. You get the idea. It isn't up yet, but I do think I've shared some excerpts, which might be where the confusion came in.

Anyway, yeah. Currently, pretty much every Jacques AU should be considered extracanonical; I'm not actually sure any of them have made contact with...I guess let's call it the Prime PPC timeline. A couple have had pieces posted (Young Wizards AU, Potterverse AU - that one was on the Board and I don't think it's actually listed on his wiki page, which is probably an oversight), but according to what's currently been posted, I don't think anyone officially knows either AU exists. And if we're considering 'canonical' or whatever to mean 'put up in a doc or other story posting format', I think it's only those two, really. Happy to be proven wrong, of course.

In 2015, Dafydd admitted to trading with the TCDA. Now this could have been the same trip as when he took Selene across, but it seems odd he would have sat on the tech for two years without a word. So he may also have gone back to visit the Constables again.

Being tech-oriented, this would be a suitable Spark for the mathematically-inclined CPP, if a better one doesn't come up.

(There's also this incident, which is at minimum PPC and TCDA versus Magical Girls, and quite possible all the multiverses getting together over sushi. But I'm not convinced it happened.)

Nikki Cherryflower, the Sakura clone who as a result has half of HQ as her fanclub since Cardcaptor Sakura is likely even more of a big thing than it is here. Corolla, the genius Nanohaverse Unison Device and Best Character (hS' words) regardless of multiverse. Possibly Ami Tanegashima, also full of invitations to join other teams because oh gods look at her she's so small and cute and we need her in our team!

Things for them are just as weird as they are for the Prime Multiverse versions.

*In the MG multiverse "Sara"'s family was likely less disfunctional, so she never ran off or had to give herself a different name.

But, anyways, to the truth of the matter: I was a little disappointed that Continuum of Plot Protectors didn't get a mention, but, then again, does it even have any published material?

Going back through the Board, the first mention was in 2020, where I discussed a possible plotline where CPP!O'Ryan switches places with our O'Ryan and everyone freaks out. I (obviously) didn't have a ton of planning out just yet. You were interested in the idea of a universe where the intention was to not kill Sues, but rather "fix" their logic to make them more canon-friendly. Some back and forth later, it kinda pattered down, as discussions do, but it's interesting to see where I started to bring CPP into conversations.

Beyond that, there's sprinkles of me mentioning the CPP, including the April Fool's Joke where my three got onto this very Board, or me mentioning after my filk song that I needed to write one for the CPP. Sprinkles.

Until the Gossip Monitor existed. Well, technically, before I made a news post about the GM, we had my graduation post, which revealed that some people in the CPP can break the fourth wall, then we had the reply, which revealed some minor worldbuilding ~~some of which I did in the moment~~, such as the MM being a genuine newspaper rather than a gossip paper. Small stuff. The Sunflower Mathematician replied to an agent. Granted, the GM might not be canon, but it's still worth mentioning. And the CPP appeared in WWS (bottom bit). That may or may not be the main CPP timeline (I want to say it is, but still on the fence), but it is also worth mentioning.

Is there a published mission/work for the CPP? No, which is why I understand why the CPP didn't get mentioned, but, since it is my AU, I am a little disappointed. It's like a parent expecting their child to get an award but didn't, you know?

Need to wait until I'm at a PC to refresh the contents list and resize the picture, but other than that we're good.

I've taken the liberty of renaming the multiverse as the Mathology - as in mythology, but also math- and - logi-. Also pathology, but I'm not sure that's relevant.

Dafydd is now Maelor - it is logical to use the latest name Tolkien gave the character, and illogical to change it and obscure his origin. Constance is Constantia, because why use a modern name when you can take the original Latin?

But, aside from the Sueish-ness I just broke out in, I find it to be acceptable and summarizes it well and simply. Wait.

Anyways, I really like it. I have not really thought of renaming any agents I shoved in (then again, logically, most of the names make sense. Why is Orian not spelled O'Ryan, as the latter is how it's pronounced: O-Ry-an. David Null is a perfectly logical name. David comes from the Bible (I think?), while Null is German for zero, and you can't get much more mathematical than literal numbers. Kittyauthor (the agent) isn't even here because she got Sued and taken in by Sues (presumably? The official record states she was Sued, although said record hasn't been written yet, so...), so her name needs no logic and can even be seen as her flaw that led to Suedom... if people were being mean.)

Slight worldbuild dump ahead.

Anyhow, if anyone beats me to a CPP fic (which I hope not, as I'm writing the Origin Story (or at least trying to), an actual story, and the basics of a guidebook out), the Mary Sue department replacement is named "Department of Actual Marys" and deals with badfic that have countable sources of breaks in the logic code (AKA one or more Sues). It reports directly to the head of CPP himself, the Sunflower Mathematician. Figured I'd get that out of the way real quick. The HQ is similar to a puzzle cube with how it moves, albeit a 4D cube (possibly, as no one has really tried to get 4D seeing individuals to back this up, and the Flowers have a bunch of words for 4D stuff that can't be translated into English). The "center" is the medical wing, which always stays in the center of the "second" floor, and the "fourth" floor is "extraneous" and always stays the cafeteria. Everything else moves logically, although "gaps" occur that transport someone onto a different "floor" which is intentional (otherwise, agents would need a head to travel floors and that just isn't good enough).

And I think that's it of "basic information in case anyone like hS wants to write a CPP fic before I'm done with the guidebook." Phew.

I had to draw Maelor and Constantia because I had them for every other multiverse, but that's as far as I'm taking them. The CPP is still yours, and if anyone decides to publish something using it I think you'd be well within your rights to ask them to take it down until you've at least got a proper story up for them.

I'm probably pushing things by changing the characters' names every time, but... it's fun. ^_^ And avoids me having to just label each picture as Dafydd and Constance again. If I hadn't written the names on the pictures, I might well have left them mostly with those names, but since they're in there, I had a bit of a play.

(The thing I most entertain myself with is that Dafydd is a Midsummer Night's Dream fairy twice, in the TCDA and APSW. His name used to be Butterfly in the former, and is still Dragonfly in the latter; he deserves everything he gets.)

In recent* years, I've come to think of them as my guide animal. According to various pages on the Internet, they signify adaptability, positivity, and seeing through deceptions. IIRC creativity was on a list somewhere, too. Plus, they're gorgeous and they eat mosquitos. ^_^

The way you've talked about them recentlt I figured they were in the Prime Multiverse, coexisting with the PPC. I'd completely spaced the earliest mentions (and hadn't seen the RP mention).

So it exists, by way of the most recent stories, but I don't think there's any actual Multiversal travel in there yet? Does that line up for you?

& is there enough detail for me to figure out who Dafydd and Constance would be?

They are, in fact, an alternate Multiverse that just so happened to have shenanigans happen that gave the PPC their newpaper and visa versa, not coexisting with the PPC (sorry about the confusion!) Not sure 100% what you mean by "actual Multiversal travel" though. If you mean "traveling between universes," nothing has been written yet involving that but they do so regularly. If you mean traveling to another Multiverse, then no, not yet. Now that I think about it, it would be rather difficult for the CPP in their main timeline to get to the PPC. However, the CPP in a minor timeline could probably get to the PPC-4 pretty dang easy, as long as that CPP had.... omniversal (what's above a multiverse?) scanning abilities. So it probably is a seperate from Prime timeline interacting with another seperate from Prime timeline.

As for "enough detail," CPP agents tend to be more math-minded than their PPC counterparts (the sole exceptions (as of now) are David Null (who is different in other ways) and CPP!O'Ryan Keys, who is math-minded in the PPC Prime timeline anyways), they tend to lean towards "original character dropped into the CPP" and not "badfic rescue" (there are some badfic rescues, but that's not common since most would get logic'd to fit their home canon) so any badfic rescue agent would have to have their backstory modified a bit to include "asked to join and was permitted" or "came from a fanfic that got deleted but they didn't or just plain slipped down a plothole" rather than being rescued, and they tend to be nicer than their PPC counterpart if that counterpart exists (exception is David Null again). In the Flowers' cases, they aren't as sadistic (and they wander the halls time to time and help agents find their RCs). In an agent's case, they're horrified at the thought of murdering Sues. Things like that :P

Oh, and, wardrobe-wise, nine times outta ten, they're carrying the basic CalcLogic devices, which look like Ti-84s in my head. The basic Ti-84 plus model. They display logic equations (AKA just mathematical equations) of the world around them when on. Think of them like a CAD and the ability to read present and past Words combined.

They couldn't coexist with the PPC if they tried. Their universe is a pocket universe and their HQ is somewhat mappable... if you can read and understand moving maps representing 4D puzzle cubes (or you just map the "fourth" floor, which is always the same no matter what). Apologies for the confusion.

It works very nicely as a term for the collective of all multiverses. Under the old theory I said "the Rose", but Spark Theory denies that the Rose exists.

I did mean between multiverses, yes. Current Multiverse Theory models each Multiverse as a bubble in the Void, containing its own World One, PPC-equivalent, and canon worlds. The theory holds that any actual travel between two of these multiverses spins off a new, unrelated multiverse; as a corollary, travel between multiverses is really hard and rare, because if it wasn't, there would be ever-increasing numbers of multiversal visitors as more and more were spawned.

So the CPP would be expected, by the scientists at DAS, to stay mostly in their own Multiverse. The Gossip Monitor incident might actually qualify as Spark-creating; O'Ryan crossing over definitely would, if and when it happened. And there must, of course, have been a Spark to create the CPP in the first place.

(Note: 'create' kind of means 'cause to always have existed'. The CPP verse, like every other Multiverse, would come into existence with its own history intact. Also note: this is a theory, held by in-universe scientists. They may be wrong. XD)

Omniversal scanning clearly doesn't create a Spark, because DAS must be using it to create this document. They are assuming a Spark only affects the timeline it occurs in, so any potential travel by the CPP in the RP won't create a new multiverse in the Prime Timeline. (I really hope this is true, because otherwise the PPCCUU is a Problem).

I suspect the picture will have Dafydd in glasses, and Constance dressed as a librarian. Will try to draw it tonight.

Oh, since you're around, can you help me write this entry? I've bashed something together, but at the very least you should get to name the multiverse, and provide the full name of the CPP (which I can't find while on my phone, sorry).

The CPP wouldn't like to hear themselves described as a "nicer PPC". As logicians and mathematicians who protect their Multiverse by fixing the logic of Suvians and other badfics, they don't really want to be associated with a bunch of murderous psychopaths at all, thank you very much.

They also don't want to hear any more Spock jokes; those get old real fast.

I was meaning "here, what is above multiverse?" but that works too.

The full name, I've debated between "Continuum of Plot Protectors" and "Continuum of Plot Protection" for a while now, but I think Continuum of Plot Protectors is funnier and much more likely to get confused, in-universe, with the PPC, which the CPP would not want at all, thank you very much, but it's funnier.

Anyways, as for what you've provided, I think that World One would, yes, be more logical, but also mathematical, as they tend to go hand-in-hand (heck, the idea of the CPP, if I recall correctly, was "PPC, but math, and oh! Did my math teacher mention something about math logic? They must be logical, too!"), so it's more of a mathematical and logic slant, not just logic slant. Does that make any sense?

(Also, IDK if I'm the only one who'd get confused on this (probably I am), but I intially thought the name of the show was The Doctor: Doctor Who and it took me a minute to realize that "oh! The name of the show is The Doctor!" Double points for me instantly thinking, "What if The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was more math-y and logical?" Which may have led to the half-baked idea of The Mathman's Guide to the Multiverse: Basically, if you took Hitchhiker's Guide and inserted a mathman and math and made the scale bigger. Again, half-baked.)

It being a seperate Multiverse with different canons does lead to a seperate problem with the topic of possible missions since the canons are different, but I'm pretty sure I can solve it with a seperate timeline or something. Out of all the things I thought through, seperate canons wasn't one of them? Gods, I even came up with a different backstory, with how the Flowers were taken across the Multiverse by a bunch of nulled Sues and determined that they really shouldn't kill them because when their powers are nullified, they can be really nice, but I didn't come up with "Well, how does The Hunger Games differ in this logical multiverse?"

(As for when the CPP's Spark ~~(gods, that sounds wrong)~~ happened, I might just write a story that takes place in 2019 just so we can have a) a published story, and b) a nice timeline.)

Re: missions - my EPC mission treats Lords of the Ring as functionally identical to Lord of the Rings. The canons may have different names, but for most multiverses they are broadly the same. It's just the nuances that are different - so, say, the Doctor in The Doctor would purportedly use logic, not emotion, to make her decisions, but the decisions would wind up being basically the same as the Doctor Who version.

Kinda sorta? It's more often someone is really good at math and makes their work on explaining math or whatever manthmatical theories mainstream (sorta like how there are famous authors known for their works or just works known for what they contain here, just math. So famoys mathematicians known for their math theorues and famous math theories known for their theories). When people hear "child prodigy," they think, "Oh! Someone great at language!" because being good at math is more of a common (and famous) thing. And math being more liked (or appearing to be more liked) than over here. Everyone Hates English is a lot more common in that World One than in this World One. If that makes any sense.

In a handful: The Logical World One is just that little bit more, well, logical, with maths being more "mainstream" and liked {Something about how Everyone Hates Math is not a thing in media, but it's Everyone Hates English that's a thing? Maybe?} This doesn't make them nicer, as people can reason and twist any sort of behaviour and make it look logical.

Something along those lines.

As noted in the Map, the World Without Authors is a big problem for timeline modelling, because even purely PPC-internal it's a merger of two distinct Timelines. Current theory has absolutely no way to deal with that, let alone the various alternate pasts that Sergio et al have run into.

... so they just ignore them, because while proper scientists use all the evidence, real scientists just dismiss inconvenient data as outliers or measurement errors. :D

... Okay, no, That's not really what's going in the Unraveled universe. Not gonna spoiler what really went on, But I can say what the Doctor himself would say if he got himself in the unraveled world.

"It's wrong! It's all wrong! Time has become a single wiggly stream, which is not supposed to be - and a stream that only started five minutes ago!"

Or maybe he's actually there and said it, who knows. I can say I'd have Eleventh in, though. Eleventh Doc Best Doc.
