Yeah, I think almost everyone here’s written a Mary Sue at one time or another, including me. But we owe you a huge thanks because without that fic, who knows what the first mission would look like?

I felt nostalgic tonight and googled my name. I haven’t written a fic in six-ish years. I came across this board and got lost in it and amused by it.
I was 22 when I wrote Rambling Band. I know it wasn’t great, but I liked writing it. I remember when the MST-ing took place, I was embarrassed and ended up deleting it from FF.net.
I now find myself wishing I’d left it up because I published over 10 chapters of the story. I went back and re-read what was salvaged and I can remember some of the plot points going forward. I don’t know if anyone is interested, but I’d be happy to answer questions.
I did continue writing fic. I’d like to think I got better, but I’m still incredibly into OC’s and romance. I do, however, try not not make them Sue’s, but early on I was not successful. I recently went back and re-read all my stories and while they are not high art or deep, I love them. It’s also a way to revisit my younger self.
Anyway, I came here to thank all of you for keeping this alive. I am sorry I don’t have a copy saved anywhere, otherwise I’d be happy to share it with you.

Welcome! And thanks so much for being such a good sport. As so many of the others in this thread have said, I certainly have a few bad writing skeletons in my closet, I just never put them online. It's been literally half a lifetime since you wrote "Rambling Band" and inspired Jay and Acacia to create the PPC, and you still found us. That's cool.
If you've been searching up "Rambling Band" on the Board chances are you've already run into the time I imagined a musical of the mission, but I do have another piece of tangential "Rambling Band" fanfic I'd like to share. The PPC has a long tradition of alternate multiverses - PPC fics where the PPC, the canon worlds , the fanfic, and even the "real world" that created them are different. A while back, I started rewriting the opening of the "Rambling Band" mission as it would appear in all the alternate realities we've written about before; I never finished, but I thought I'd share it:

I'll be the... fifth (?) to admit that Laurel Carter wasn't the worst (I, at like 10, wrote a character named "Snowy Jones" that was 10x worse... at least she wasn't in a fanfic, thank the gods), she just happens to be the first, and probably the very reason why we all are here! So thank you! I'm glad to see that there are no hard feelings!

No hard feelings at all! When it first happened I was embarrassed and knee-jerked myself into deletion. I truly wish I had a back up now that I know people are curious about it.
With age, comes some perspective. I love the creativity of the missions and the community that grew from the original series. I felt compelled to log on and say hello, because I figured it would be a full-circle moment and I have been thinking since last night, trying to remember more about the 10-11 other chapters I published.
There was definitely something about a flower, that Laurel gave to Legolas or vice versa and non-consensual smooching from Boromir (which I don’t think I will ever forgive myself for. He deserves better and I was young and silly).
Have a notebook with the word “Inspiration” on it.
I’m sure we’ve all written some less-than-stellar stuff in the past. I recall one original story I wrote when I was younger—it was pretty bad, and misspelled, and the narrator was a Gary Stu.
There’s no way Laurel Carter is the worst we’ve dealt with—there was a Sue who possessed Arda once. And of course, there’s Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way.
I did put the Rambling Band mission through Google Translate a while back. It was pretty ridiculous, if you’d like to see it.

I think it’s interesting to go back and read my stories from 20 years ago. I can honestly say I have developed as a writer. I got my fanfic start writing stories with my friend about the Power Rangers, long before I had a computer or the Internet. I wish I still had those as well, but they are lost to time.
I’ve had some other stories that got a lot of reads and likes that I’ve deleted, and I’ve tried not to do that anymore. The last one was in 2011, and it was a wrestling fan fic (my interests truly are ALL over the place). But once again, I wish I would’ve just moved it so I could re-read it.

Chapter 1: Performance
"I miss you Jeff"
Turning her car onto South Bloomsdale Street, Laurel lit a cigarette and teased her sister. He kicked the dashboard with his big boot, opened the car door, and threw away his cigarette. Her long dark brown hair was thrown back as she angrily slammed the back door.
"Laurel, calm down.
He turned his head to see Cole exiting the back door of the van. His eyes darkened because he was mute.
Laurel wrapped her body in a knee-length leather jacket. Playing outside in front of 400 fans in the middle of December requires dressing for the weather.
However, these are not his supporters. This made Laurel very angry.
Laurel let out an angry sigh and her green eyes focused on the drummer. "I'm sorry, Cole. I can't believe my brother asked me to play a concert when I couldn't play my own material. We never thought of playing a Led Zeppelin cover of a song." . . . . These are strangers.
"It's a hobbit, Laurel. Boy, you stick out to me like a sore thumb? It's been a while tonight, that's the show," Jeff pointed out petting her. The beginning of the most sacred night."

Jeff glared at Cole and threw a stick. Despite this situation, Laurel couldn't stop smiling.
The drive-thru decided to throw a big party in honor of the Lord of the Rings premiere (midnight show). Jeffrey Carter, Laurel's brother and the band's drummer, is a fan of the book and is looking forward to the movie's release. He counted the hours until the last five months. Then, when he receives free concert and show tickets, he jumps right in without asking Cole and Laurel. Have Jeff and Cole get some supplies while Laurel follows the driver. He goes to the commissary with his make-up from one hand to the other, sometimes looking for a beard, an excuse for stripes, or some kind of 'life in Frodo sign' labeled 'people who wear- or a shirt'. He reached the end of the tunnel where the stable was located. Behind the counter is a strong and happy man.
'Excuse me? But are you Mr. Randall? """
The man smiled and nodded, "Yes, I'm Mr. Randall, I can help you, okay?"
Laurel smiled a little, "Well, my name is Laurel Carter, and I'm a member of JC's trio. You, hey, we're inviting you to the show, you want me on stage?"
The old man smiled and said: Yes, yes, there is a small platform on the left side of the screen, where you will fall down the mountain.
He shifted his weight and nodded: Thank you.
Climbing in boots and skins is not easy. He usually wears these shoes to complement his six-foot-seven height, but at this point they hurt everywhere but his neck.
He walked to the stage and stood quietly. He couldn't help but smile as he looked in the mirror. Her eye shadow was visible and her cheeks were red from the December night. He removed his hair from the laurel braid and tucked it into his leather pants pocket.

Laurel, but you have a name, right?
Laurel reached into the front pocket of his cigarettes and pulled out three sheets of paper and some scotch tape. After "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Battle of Evermore," we end with "Stairway to Heaven" and "Ramble On" at the end of the soundtrack set. About forty minutes.
The three children saw Laurel help her carry things. The two looked at each other and stretched out their hands, "Hey! Larry, Mengmeng and Corley! Someone stabbed me in the head?"
The boys nodded in unison, the youngest with dark hair, wide eyes and a tense expression, "Well, we can't wait to see you on stage, we're looking forward to it. Yeah, that's cool.""
Laurel shook her head. "I promise you, this will disappoint you. Now, if you don't mind, I'll write the numbers on the stage."
Laurel stood up and took three steps up the stairs, noting where each member was. Jeff and Cole start setup while Laurel checks the mic and amp cables. Jeff sighed and moved closer to her.
"Come on, sister. RIP. Have fun. Drink beer in the car and watch the most anticipated movie of the year for free. If not the most anticipated movie." Kind of. Stop being a singer.
Laurel: "I'd do anything. You've been here. I take off my coat because I'm leaving in five minutes. The bum can't slow the car down.
Jeff threw up his hands in surrender, "Okay! Hobbit House!"
Laurel turned around and smiled: "Well, I know. I want to see who's here.
Cole and Jeff joined the scene, and Laurel took off her blouse to reveal a long-sleeved blouse with long buttons and silver bracelets. Cole was tall, with dark hair and dark eyes. His eyebrows are like rings, and there are holes in each ear. He wears blue jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt over a black leather jacket.
Jeff was no taller than Laurel and had the same hair and eye color as his brother. He wears a Led Zeppelin short-sleeve T-shirt emblazoned with the final lines from The Witch of the Hill and Stairway to Heaven. She has two earrings and a moon and sun tattoo on her wrist. Between the three of them, there are sixteen holes in their bodies. Same number as many rock bands.
Oh, the lights are on. Randall took to the stage and said, "Thank you to everyone who came to this special event. The Lord of the Rings: The Club of the Ring will air in an hour.
Laurel spoke as the crowd went wild. this. "Meanwhile, I hired a local rock band to play your favorite Tolkien-inspired songs," America Randall said. I am very glad to meet Mr. We are a group of three! "
Cole came out first from behind the drums, followed by Jeff on his brass guitar, and the crowd cheered as Laurel raised his hands above his head. It's not just applause. They were bombed. Geoff smiled as he took the twenty-two pack.
Thirty minutes later, Laurel is a little drunk (at least, more than drunk) and Cole is sitting quietly in the back seat of the truck.
Laurel looked at the drummer "Where's my brother?"
Cole turned to him and waved, "I'm outside watching a fantastic movie with the others."
Laurel shrugged, “Oh. Yes," he says.
At that moment, Jeff opened the back door of the van and got inside. "Well, they're ready to go to Rivendell." You will have to come and see.
Laurel smiled and said, “Sure, Big Brother. I want to close the van. I have to turn on the heating so it doesn't get cold."

"Laurel? Can you hear me? My name is Jeff."
Laurel's brow furrowed as her sister's voice trailed off. Strong hands grabbed him and lifted him onto his broad shoulders. A loud voice was ringing in his ears and he ignored it. - You'll get well. We have business near Rivendell; a friend of mine is very ill and we were brought here early. We'll get there one day and you'll rest well.

Please come quickly. But in the meantime it is well to persevere, for I fear that disaster will soon come and cease."

When she cried, he put his arm around her waist and covered her mouth with the other. "Sit down. Miss, there is no danger, but don't worry, your brother is fine, your friend is fine, you are safe."
Pride is difficult in front of strangers. Then he released her and lay down. Laurel saw a man with long hair and blue eyes. He threatens, but his hand is relaxed. However, she is afraid of Laurel and tells her to keep quiet.
A voice behind her "Laurel."
Laurel looked back to see her sister and Cole immediately stood up. "Nice to meet you all," he said and gave everyone a big hug.
A crackling sound echoed around them, and a stranger's hand reached into their hair and grasped a blade. Laurel carried Jeff and Cole on her shoulders, breathing down their necks.
Something enthusiastic brought a jug of water and a brush. "Are you awake? I'm wet!"
Merry and Pippin hugged. "Thanks, Sam," Denum said, removing his hand. I'm sure he likes it, he said.
Hub slowly approached Laurel and handed her a bowl.
"Thanks," Laurel said, walking over and taking the bowl from Sam with a smile.
Jeff sat down and Laurel sat down. Soon everyone sat down and showed interest in the topic they were attached to. Then, looking at the hobbit, his eyes fell on the man.
"I don't know, what happened? Where is the car?"
Jeff pointed behind them. "The fan is back in the garden. Merry, Sam, Pippin and Strid met the elf on the way to the crack and took the phone from me."
Laurel took a bite and coughed.
The alien, whom Laurel calls Strider, speaks in a calm voice.
"No," Jeff shouted. I came by accident.
Sam looked as confused as the others.
"I don't know," Jeff said.
Strider shifts the weight. "For now we must concentrate on the Rift. When you get there you can ask Sir Elrondr. Ask for help. Women kill…
Laurel looks at Cole. "Trap? Does it hurt?" he asked the guy.
The phone shows the feet. "You look good in the calves, Rell" by Strider.
When Laurel saw his legs, his leather pants were torn and the makeshift belt had fallen from his belt. Vague thoughts and memories raced through Laurel's mind. how's it going here. These people. This may not be correct. At Strider's voice, he started thinking again "Can I move mom?"
Laurel nodded her head.
"I think." Please stop calling me ma'am. - I usually answer Laurel. The walker almost waved as he and the hobbit turned to face the hobbit.
Laurel took a calm, confident step. "Why the hll was I wearing these dmn shoes?"
Cole and Jeff share a laugh as Cole leans over and motions for Laurel to climb up. "So a pig huh? I haven't had one since I was six," she couldn't help but smile as she placed her hands on her shoulders.
Cole laughed, "Anything for a damsel in distress, lady."
Laurel whispered in his ear, "Ha ha. very funny."
The four of them followed for about an hour, then Laurel started asking for cigarettes and crap in her coat pocket, "Sh*t. They left. "I can't do it right now because of the smoke.
As the words left her lips, Merry and Pippin appeared to her left. Mary smiled, "do you smoke?"
Laurel smiled, "After a while. "Don't tell mom."
Pippin points out the subject.
Laurel dropped her mouth and turned to her right to look at Jeff, “You didn't tell me hobbits smoke! Is that why you like stories?
Jeff smiled and put it down, "Relax, relax. It's a weed pipe. It's his kind of cigarette."
Laurel and Cole look at it like it's a two-headed creature and say in unison, "Of course it is."
Strider stops in front of the Great River. Cole leads Laurel to the end and Strider leads them to the side where they are greeted by a white woman with long dark hair. Strider sighed, "Lady Arwen is waiting to come with us to Rivendell. COLE How about getting Laurel some time?
Cole nodded awkwardly, "Yeah, I'm fine."
Dagargabe patted him on the shoulder and started to cross the river behind his hobby. Laurel looked at Jeff "Who is Arwen?"
"Arwen is Elrond's daughter," Jef said, passing the cold flask of water. It's a goblin."
Laurel nodded, "Oh."
Jeff smiled, "Strider is a girl."
Confused, Laurel said, “Ah!
Jeff whispered, "Nothing." Dwarves are immortal. Join her and escape your death.
Cole jumped in the water and said, "Man, that's tough."
"Very strong," Laurel nodded.
Eventually they reached the beach where Arwen was waiting in a beautiful white dress. Her blue eyes looked at Strider, "We've been waiting for you."
Strider gently held his hand and spoke to the elves, "How are you, Frodo?"
Arwen sighed heavily but said calmly, "My father took a while. He's inside with Gandalf.
Then spat the handsome elf, "Is Gandalf in big trouble?"
Arwen agreed, "Yes, Saruman captured him and betrayed him. He will have more to say at the town hall tomorrow."
Strider looked at Rocklink, "What about the others?"
Aven looked at the three strangers and replied: "The morning will come, but I want to ask who are the guests you have brought."
Strider turns and leads the trio forward. As they approach Arwen and Strider, Cole defeats Laurel. The walker touched Jeff's shoulder. "This is Jeff, Cole, and Lady Laurel. They came from far away and got lost in Middle Earth. They came to ask your father for advice. Laurel was badly hurt."
Arwen nodded, “I'm sure my father would be happy. But tonight they would all rest comfortably in Elrond's home.
Arwen took Laurel's hand and said, "Come on girl, I'll help you get ready. The other guards take them to their rooms. "I'm sure the hobbits want to see Frodo." Laurel nodded and let the tall look for.

And it's so good to hear you've kept on writing! God knows my own earliest fics were a mess (I missioned my old Potter Sue from back in the day) but we all have to start somewhere, eh? Keep that creative spirit alive, because at the end of the day it's all about having fun with what you make.

Nice to hear that you're still writing. Embarrassment from getting sporked is only natural, and it's nice to know you've kept going and improved since then.
It’s an honor, really, to be able to talk about this now. Time has given me a lot of perspective about what he MST-ing. If anything, it helped me grow. So I am thankful for that :)
This feels like meeting a celebrity, haha. The writer of the first story to be PPC'd, here on our message board. Wow! I guess it's fair to say that without your story, we might not be here today, so please accept my sincere gratitude.
Oddly enough, I also just recently went back and looked at some of my old fanfic and forum posts from when I was younger (15 in my case). Must be something in the air. So, I empathize very much with that feeling of fondness for an old work even knowing it's just awful. {X D
It's very cool of you to come here and offer to satisfy our curiosity even though you were embarrassed enough to take your story down before. For whatever it's worth 20 years later, Laurel was not the worst. She just had the dubious distinction of being the first. As one of the PPC's self-appointed historians, I'd be interested in anything you can remember about her story.
I'm glad to hear you kept writing! If you're comfortable sharing, I'd be curious to see some of your more recent work, too.

I have a bunch on my FF page, around 16 or so. Some abandoned, some complete. I dabbled in smut but, eh, I still don’t know if it’s for me, haha. Still tons of typos and errors because I tend to write when I can’t sleep or when I am on my phone.
I can’t believe the community here. It’s been flattering and heartwarming in a way that only can come with time. I wish I had not been so rash to delete it when the MST-ing occurred. I now find it very funny and I think it’s pretty amazing that this has all kept going for 20 years.
You are too kind about Laurel. If I remember correctly after smooching Boromir, she then realized she was into Legolas and sang him songs by the band Heart down by the River on her, ahem, harp. I cannot for the life of me remembered what happened with Geoff and Cole, lol.
I think I made it all the way to Lothlorien with them, along some forced kissing by Boromir (which I wholeheartedly regret, he deserved better). There were many more rock music references as I had actually been taking music courses (history of) and I worked in a Camelot selling CD’s part-time.
What actually came from the MSTing was me taking a closer and more careful look at the source material. I fell even more in love with Tolkien as I read every single appendices and histories he noted in the books.
I’m kind of in awe about this board. I can’t believe the things that have come from it and been created. I’m floored!
... Was it going to be "Sylvan Song" and/or "Dream of the Archer"? I bet it was. {= ) Looking at the MST, those were in the band's set from the first chapter, too.
And I reckon they WOULD work with harp accompaniment. As would some Led Zep songs, honestly. (Look/listen, "Immigrant Song" on two electric harps. It's haunting and cool!) And a surprising amount of rock and metal in general. (Bardcore, anyone? I love me some bardcore. Something about that style of instrumentation combined with modern song forms, it's just great IMO.)
But, ah, that college phase of feeling like you now know everything and must tell the world, eh? {= )
Oh, this all reminds me of a question! Do you remember which Led Zep song(s) the band played in Rivendell? I've got a playlist of (almost) every bit of music referenced in the PPC's Original Series, and I used "Misty Mountain Hop" in that spot (it was in the set and it's fitting!), but it's just a guess. Getting a definitive word on the matter would ease my completionist heart. (Track list here, actual YouTube playlist here.)
Awkward follow-up question: have you seen the PPC mission as well as the MST? The mission goes a tad bit further into "Rambling Band" than the MST, though I think it's all collected in Huinesoron's reconstruction of the fic regardless.

Okay I know the Heart songs were Sylvan Song, Dream of the Archer and Love Alive (I was obsessed with the album Little Queen).
As for Zep, it was Ramble On, Battle of Evermore, Misty Mountain Hop, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Over the Hills and Far Away, Tangerine and Stairway.
I feel like I might have tossed some other songs in there from other artists, even though the above were the primary ones. I’ll go back and take a look at what my mixes looked like back then (yes, I mean CD’s lol) and report back if I can think of any more.

I am not sure if I read the PPC mission but I would love any link or reference you all can throw at me. I’m truly loving learning about all of this.
"Rambling Band" the PPC Mission featuring Agents Jay and Acacia, written by Author!Jay and Author!Acacia—same one who did the MST. But I believe the mission was written first.
So, did the band play their whole set in Rivendell? In that case I guess "Misty Mountain Hop" is as good a choice as any to represent the "modern song" Jay and Acacia comment on, heh.

I think it was just one song. It could have been Misty Mountain, but my young brain might have chose Tangerine. I very vividly remember a Tangerine performance.

I have many a penance to pay for Boromir! I wrote a series about him about a year or two later that was much better. I still had a lot to learn about writing, though.
I'm glad to hear you've kept on with OCs and romance; if you've got any you'd be okay with sharing, I'd love to check them out. I wonder what you had originally planned for the story with Laurel and her band? Were there plans for her to introduce Thranduil to the joys of Led Zepp harp covers? :'D

Upon discovering the board, one of the things that made me emotional was your Rambling Band inspired art. The mesmerized eyes and Laurel with the harp made me laugh and also it touched me that something I made in a way got turned into visual art!
I have plenty of fics on my FF. Net page. You can see my ages as I have written them…all through my 20’s up to my mid 30’s…where I dabbled in smut. I still prefer things to happen off-page but some of my readers loved it shrug?
I am not sure if Mirkwood was in the cards for Laurel, but I know the idea was for her band mates to get home and she stays behind. What the motivation was, I am not sure? Did she grow…sadly probably not. I wanted her to be a rocker chick and a fish out of water. And I made very poor, poor choices with Boromir.
