I felt nostalgic tonight and googled my name. I haven’t written a fic in six-ish years. I came across this board and got lost in it and amused by it.

I was 22 when I wrote Rambling Band. I know it wasn’t great, but I liked writing it. I remember when the MST-ing took place, I was embarrassed and ended up deleting it from FF.net.

I now find myself wishing I’d left it up because I published over 10 chapters of the story. I went back and re-read what was salvaged and I can remember some of the plot points going forward. I don’t know if anyone is interested, but I’d be happy to answer questions.

I did continue writing fic. I’d like to think I got better, but I’m still incredibly into OC’s and romance. I do, however, try not not make them Sue’s, but early on I was not successful. I recently went back and re-read all my stories and while they are not high art or deep, I love them. It’s also a way to revisit my younger self.

Anyway, I came here to thank all of you for keeping this alive. I am sorry I don’t have a copy saved anywhere, otherwise I’d be happy to share it with you.

I’ll be the first to admit, Laurel Carter is the worst.

It's been literally half a lifetime since you wrote "Rambling Band" and inspired Jay and Acacia to create the PPC, and you still found us. That's cool.

If you've been searching up "Rambling Band" on the Board chances are you've already run into the time I imagined a musical of the mission, but I do have another piece of tangential "Rambling Band" fanfic I'd like to share. The PPC has a long tradition of alternate multiverses - PPC fics where the PPC, the canon worlds , the fanfic, and even the "real world" that created them are different. A while back, I started rewriting the opening of the "Rambling Band" mission as it would appear in all the alternate realities we've written about before; I never finished, but I thought I'd share it:

I'll be the... fifth (?) to admit that Laurel Carter wasn't the worst (I, at like 10, wrote a character named "Snowy Jones" that was 10x worse... at least she wasn't in a fanfic, thank the gods), she just happens to be the first, and probably the very reason why we all are here! So thank you! I'm glad to see that there are no hard feelings!

No hard feelings at all! When it first happened I was embarrassed and knee-jerked myself into deletion. I truly wish I had a back up now that I know people are curious about it.

With age, comes some perspective. I love the creativity of the missions and the community that grew from the original series. I felt compelled to log on and say hello, because I figured it would be a full-circle moment and I have been thinking since last night, trying to remember more about the 10-11 other chapters I published.

There was definitely something about a flower, that Laurel gave to Legolas or vice versa and non-consensual smooching from Boromir (which I don’t think I will ever forgive myself for. He deserves better and I was young and silly).

Have a notebook with the word “Inspiration” on it.

I’m sure we’ve all written some less-than-stellar stuff in the past. I recall one original story I wrote when I was younger—it was pretty bad, and misspelled, and the narrator was a Gary Stu.

There’s no way Laurel Carter is the worst we’ve dealt with—there was a Sue who possessed Arda once. And of course, there’s Ebony Dark’ness Dementia Raven Way.

I did put the Rambling Band mission through Google Translate a while back. It was pretty ridiculous, if you’d like to see it.

Even if you don’t plan on being a permanent visitor to the Board, thanks for visiting.

I would absolutely love to see the Google Translate of the mission!

I think it’s interesting to go back and read my stories from 20 years ago. I can honestly say I have developed as a writer. I got my fanfic start writing stories with my friend about the Power Rangers, long before I had a computer or the Internet. I wish I still had those as well, but they are lost to time.

I’ve had some other stories that got a lot of reads and likes that I’ve deleted, and I’ve tried not to do that anymore. The last one was in 2011, and it was a wrestling fan fic (my interests truly are ALL over the place). But once again, I wish I would’ve just moved it so I could re-read it.

And it's so good to hear you've kept on writing! God knows my own earliest fics were a mess (I missioned my old Potter Sue from back in the day) but we all have to start somewhere, eh? Keep that creative spirit alive, because at the end of the day it's all about having fun with what you make.

This feels like meeting a celebrity, haha. The writer of the first story to be PPC'd, here on our message board. Wow! I guess it's fair to say that without your story, we might not be here today, so please accept my sincere gratitude.

Oddly enough, I also just recently went back and looked at some of my old fanfic and forum posts from when I was younger (15 in my case). Must be something in the air. So, I empathize very much with that feeling of fondness for an old work even knowing it's just awful. {X D

It's very cool of you to come here and offer to satisfy our curiosity even though you were embarrassed enough to take your story down before. For whatever it's worth 20 years later, Laurel was not the worst. She just had the dubious distinction of being the first. As one of the PPC's self-appointed historians, I'd be interested in anything you can remember about her story.

I have a bunch on my FF page, around 16 or so. Some abandoned, some complete. I dabbled in smut but, eh, I still don’t know if it’s for me, haha. Still tons of typos and errors because I tend to write when I can’t sleep or when I am on my phone.

I can’t believe the community here. It’s been flattering and heartwarming in a way that only can come with time. I wish I had not been so rash to delete it when the MST-ing occurred. I now find it very funny and I think it’s pretty amazing that this has all kept going for 20 years.

You are too kind about Laurel. If I remember correctly after smooching Boromir, she then realized she was into Legolas and sang him songs by the band Heart down by the River on her, ahem, harp. I cannot for the life of me remembered what happened with Geoff and Cole, lol.

I think I made it all the way to Lothlorien with them, along some forced kissing by Boromir (which I wholeheartedly regret, he deserved better). There were many more rock music references as I had actually been taking music courses (history of) and I worked in a Camelot selling CD’s part-time.

What actually came from the MSTing was me taking a closer and more careful look at the source material. I fell even more in love with Tolkien as I read every single appendices and histories he noted in the books.

I’m kind of in awe about this board. I can’t believe the things that have come from it and been created. I’m floored!

... Was it going to be "Sylvan Song" and/or "Dream of the Archer"? I bet it was. {= ) Looking at the MST, those were in the band's set from the first chapter, too.

And I reckon they WOULD work with harp accompaniment. As would some Led Zep songs, honestly. (Look/listen, "Immigrant Song" on two electric harps. It's haunting and cool!) And a surprising amount of rock and metal in general. (Bardcore, anyone? I love me some bardcore. Something about that style of instrumentation combined with modern song forms, it's just great IMO.)

But, ah, that college phase of feeling like you now know everything and must tell the world, eh? {= )

Oh, this all reminds me of a question! Do you remember which Led Zep song(s) the band played in Rivendell? I've got a playlist of (almost) every bit of music referenced in the PPC's Original Series, and I used "Misty Mountain Hop" in that spot (it was in the set and it's fitting!), but it's just a guess. Getting a definitive word on the matter would ease my completionist heart. (Track list here, actual YouTube playlist here.)

Awkward follow-up question: have you seen the PPC mission as well as the MST? The mission goes a tad bit further into "Rambling Band" than the MST, though I think it's all collected in Huinesoron's reconstruction of the fic regardless.

Okay I know the Heart songs were Sylvan Song, Dream of the Archer and Love Alive (I was obsessed with the album Little Queen).

As for Zep, it was Ramble On, Battle of Evermore, Misty Mountain Hop, Bron-Y-Aur Stomp, Over the Hills and Far Away, Tangerine and Stairway.

I feel like I might have tossed some other songs in there from other artists, even though the above were the primary ones. I’ll go back and take a look at what my mixes looked like back then (yes, I mean CD’s lol) and report back if I can think of any more.

Oh wait, another Heart tune…These Dreams.

I am not sure if I read the PPC mission but I would love any link or reference you all can throw at me. I’m truly loving learning about all of this.

"Rambling Band" the PPC Mission featuring Agents Jay and Acacia, written by Author!Jay and Author!Acacia—same one who did the MST. But I believe the mission was written first.

So, did the band play their whole set in Rivendell? In that case I guess "Misty Mountain Hop" is as good a choice as any to represent the "modern song" Jay and Acacia comment on, heh.

Little Queen is a cool album, this is indisputable. {= )

I think it was just one song. It could have been Misty Mountain, but my young brain might have chose Tangerine. I very vividly remember a Tangerine performance.

I have read that one, but it was fun to read it again!

I have many a penance to pay for Boromir! I wrote a series about him about a year or two later that was much better. I still had a lot to learn about writing, though.

Upon discovering the board, one of the things that made me emotional was your Rambling Band inspired art. The mesmerized eyes and Laurel with the harp made me laugh and also it touched me that something I made in a way got turned into visual art!

I have plenty of fics on my FF. Net page. You can see my ages as I have written them…all through my 20’s up to my mid 30’s…where I dabbled in smut. I still prefer things to happen off-page but some of my readers loved it shrug?

I am not sure if Mirkwood was in the cards for Laurel, but I know the idea was for her band mates to get home and she stays behind. What the motivation was, I am not sure? Did she grow…sadly probably not. I wanted her to be a rocker chick and a fish out of water. And I made very poor, poor choices with Boromir.
