I've been reading TOS and the other spin-offs for a while and decided I'd go ahead and join the Board. So, yeah... I just want to say I respect what you are trying to do here and hope to one day make my own spin-off.

You do NOT screw with Gimli, Pipin, or Frodo.
Other than that... For books I guess Harry Potter, The Percy Jackson series(yes, immature, but I still like it), and the Dresden Files (not many fanfics for that out there).
For other live action, I would say... Buffy, Firefly, Supernatural(many, many, MANY sues)
And I like various anime casually. -
