Like the Jaycacia of the Eledhwen/Christianne ship.
So, based on DawnFire and Ailavyn Siniyash's discussion of 'ship names for PPCers - specifically the Jay/Acacia ship, Byrdtree (or maybe it could be Jaycacia - no, taken - or Thornbyrd - no, taken too ;)) - I started scribbling a few of my own. Of course I started with my OTP, Dafydd/Constance - which, me not being very good at this, became Dafstance.
'Oh hey,' thought I, 'that sounds sort of like a Pokemon. I wonder what it would be like...?'
Oh dear. There's a fair number of Dafydd 'ships, aren't there?
No, the other sort of canonical.
I just call Eledhwen/Christianne E/C, because I'm lazy, but I know how that gets confused with every other ship out there. Noting hS's suggestions of Chrisdhwen or Elechris... hm.
Eh, I like Elechris, though to be honest the ship name in my head would fall something more along the lines of "the S.S. Snark and Soulmates" or something.
Yeah, a literal ship name.
I was reading through some older missions when I got these ideas stuck in my head. Many sincere and humble apologies to the owners of these agents. I am indeed a crazy and horrible person.
Gall Bonecrusher/Laura Dukes - Gallra, Gallroy Dukens
Suicide/Supernumerary - Suicume, Supercide, Bitter Cider
Supernumerary/Xericka - Xume, Team Serious Business
I'm seeing it as a Psychic/Dark type, fitting with aspects of the personality of its two component characters, and the image the name gives me. It's a very cool name.
Maybe I'll try my hand at writing Pokédex-style descriptions later for a few of the names this thread's come up with. Could be fun. I'm making Xume's first, though, or at least early on. Because it's awesome. Awesome things deserve priority.
Doc/Vania Tolluk:
1. Donia-Maybe a Dark- or Steel-type Pokémon, themed around rulership?
2. Docnia-A straight Bug-type, or perhaps Bug/Dark spidery thing.
3. Vandoc-A shoe brand.
4. Toldoc-And handsome.
5. Dolluk-GOTTA EXTERMINATE 'EM ALL! II IS SUPER EFFECTIVE AGAINST ALL INFERIOR LIFE FORMS
Vania/Paul (I know I haven't even written Paul, but knowing what I know about him, just suggesting this ship feels awful.
1. Vaul-A Fighting-type with a Viking helmet?
2. Paunia-A Water/Bug-type shrimpy thing?
3. Paullok-Something eradicated by the CDC a century ago.
Paul/Doc
1. Pauc-An Ice-type penguin with hockey gear (this must happen for real).
2. Daul-Yet another Ghost-type with a Pokédex entry that becomes disturbing if you think about it too hard.
As I haven't Permission, I haven't agents to ship, so I shan't be making ship names, but everyone's are all so wonderful and silly, and I thought I'd point that out.
-Aila
Geeze. Of course I manage to give my two main agents really hard names to smush together.
So, first up is Lian, which sounds okay, but not the best. Hm. Let's look at their last names...
Moorehaven and Nahinu. Morinu? Naven? Right. Maybe not so much.
Let's see. Well, I could always do something a bit more non-traditional. After all, not all ship names need to be made up of their names (I'm looking at you here, Avengers fandom and, of course, WolfStar from HP).
Right! With that in mind, let's see what comes up:
Hawaiian Cougar (Eesh. Maybe not.)
S&A (for Shield and Anchor; slightly obscure)
...
I have decided I'm horrible at coming up with ship names for awkwardly named characters. Huzzah!
So... I have a couple (self-made) ships I'd like to put through the ringer. So let's get started, shall we?
Eusabius/Zerenze: Eusenze, Zerabius
You can figure out which name you like better for that. Personally, I prefer "Eusenze".
In the event of both, I imagine Eusenze would be a Water/Psychic type pokemon, while Zerabius would be some Earth/Fire thingamajig. I dunno. And I have no idea what is up with the Burned Hand Pokemon stuff, but that might be because I haven't even touched Pokemon since Generation 2 (best generation ever, BTW!).
Xanthus/Annie: Xannie, Annthus, Xanthie
Damn, there are no good names for that ship, LOL. I'm totes going with Xannie, though, since it's the less silly of the bunch. I frankly don't know what to do with these, so... I dunno.
Shipping
Shipping, or 'relationshipping', is the art or habit of claiming that two characters are or should be in a relationship. It can apply to characters that actually are (Eledhwen and Christienne), or who never were (Dafydd and Vemi). As made famous by the Harry Potter fandom, ships can be given names formed by mashing their character names together - such as the Harry/Hermione ship being called 'Harmony'. That one also illustrates that slight spelling changes are okay.
Pokemon
Pokemon is a children's entertainment franchise about catching monsters and forcing them to fight for your twisted entertainment. Er... no, actually, that's pretty accurate. The monsters (Pokemon) have either one or two elemental 'types', ranging from the classic (Fire, Water) to the unusual (Steel, Rock, Psychic) to the obvious (Flying, Normal). They also have encyclopedia entries, which give a two or three word description (Camel Pokemon), and a short description of them ('It lives in trees and drops on the heads of unwary passers-by, relying on its hardened skin to protect it from harm').
The PPC
The PPC is a flat world which rides on the back of four elephants, which themselves stand on the shell of an enormous turtle, which (being a turtle) swims endlessly through space.
hS
Here, shipnames for Christianne/Eledhwen.
Christiel (Supernatural Angel name. Sounds...exceedingly Christian, actually. I think this would be Time Lord!Christianne gone mad with power...and merged with Eledhwen--okay, shutting down that train of thought now, it's going the way of Time Lord Victorious.)
Elechris (Credit to hS! Not entirely sure what it sounds like...Personally, I like the beginning, but I'm not sure I like it overall. The search continues!)
...that is, the search would continue, but my ideas have run dry. Anyone else?
~DF
...that Suethors would use for the Tolkienverse.
Like, I'm fairly certain it's popped up in an 'Elvish name list' somewhere. Don't recall seeing it on realelvish, though.
I suppose it could be related to the 'rist' element of Orcrist, but with a random 'c' at the beginning...but considering it would mean 'daughter of cleaver', I don't know why anyone would give or choose that name. It's a bit odd, to say the least.
~DF
Realistically, however, I can see that being the father name for some girl whose parent was a warrior (or a butcher?).
But poor girl if she's introduced to someone who doesn't know her heritage!
And the point about Sues is very true.
~DF
While it's definitely pronounced 'Elechris', I think it's spelt 'Elekriss'. Which is definitely a pokemon.
The alternative is 'Chrisdhwen/Christhwen' (depending on whether you want the accurate spelling or a readable one). Ooh - or there's Elestienne, which is actually quite a nice word.
hS
Like the Jaycacia of the Eledhwen/Christianne ship.
Lily, no, now I want to write that. What have you done?
Stay tuned, Badfic Game...although possibly next year's Badfic Game, I've already got three stories I'm trying to finish...
~DF
Unfortunately, you then can't tell it's the shipname. Hm.
Ooh, Elestienne. That sounds good. I think that one has my vote.
~DF
Elechriss/Elekriss would make for a good Pokémon name (Bug-type, maybe? It's not in the motifs of either character, but the "ch" right next to the sibilant at the end there associates it with insects to me. Probably Psychic as a primary, or possibly Electric, but I'm going with Bug as a secondary.), but Elechriss sounds like... some sort of mystic armament. Like one of those lightweight swords in Arthurian-style fantasy made up of an unearthly metal, the sort that can cut through practically anything with little effort on the part of its bearer. Still awesome. Plus, just imagine Eledhwen wielding one of those. Character-perfect.
Would her sword be named after the ship, though? Would the word even mean the same thing in-universe? Further questions to ponder. Possibly only by me, but ponder nonetheless.
Though, considering that the PPC has at least a few meta-cognizant individuals on its staff, the answer to the second question could easily be both yes and no to some people.
(still unpublished, but hey)... I wouldn't be surprised if the Armoury suddenly got a shipment of Elechriss Stabby Things.
Did someone say minigun? As in Heavy Weapons Guy style minigun?
Please, I need to know. It sounds so awesome.
I wants one, my precious, yes I does.
~DF
Because it's really fun to say.
Naruu (Narto/Lou)
Normal/Psychic-type
Meta Pokemon
It has acquired a gaming system of some kind, from which it is utterly inseperable. It uses the device to perform all its attacks, of which it has an impressively large number. Perhaps unfortunately, almost all of these attacks are fairly low-level...
hS
Nuima(Decima/Nume)
Psychic-type
Bookworm Pokemon
It is often found lurking near libraries. It absorbs any knowledge it can get its hands on.
Decume(Decima/Nume)
Evolves from Nuima
Psychic-type
Dry Wit Pokemon
It is quiet and brooding. It is not known to speak, but its eyebrows can communicate volumes.
Superdecimary(Decima/Nume)
Evolves from Decume
Psychic/Fire-type
Righteous Outrage Pokemon
It is usually calm, but if it is presented with something it doesn't like it becomes extremely volatile and responds with blasts of withering heat.
... the name 'Superdecimary'. I'm sort of picturing these as an anthropomorphic book - but in a cool way, not an Egyptian god shove-a-stupid-head-on-it way. I'm not sure how that would work in actual visuals... hrm. Something like this?
Those are supposed to be two rolled pages for the arms, two folded down pages for the legs, with the rest of the pages sticking out to the sides and the covers folded right back to make those two little spikes (which look something like wings). I guess this would be Nuima - Decume would be a bigger book with some intricate origami work to give it a (mouthless) face and better limbs, while Superdecimary, befitting its fire nature, would actually be pieces of charred paper hovering above an empty or burning book cover.
Very little chance of me drawing that, though. (But I bet 'Nuima' could be made in reality... I'll try that sometime)
hS
I had pictured more of a hermit crab (appropriate, I think) with a book as a shell for Nuima. Something small with the ability to hide easily. The "crab" body could easily be made of paper.
For Decume, I pictured it becoming larger with more books making up the whole. I like the origami aspect in your interpretation, and using that to make the face (which we only need for the eyebrows, really).
Superdecimary would be more bipedal, in my interpretation, though still made of books. I keep picturing a staff with an open, burning book on the top of it, as well.
It's fun to see how we each see these things.
-Phobos
I realise these don't quite match your descriptions - but I can't draw! I'm really pleased with Nuima (it's just so cute!), and actually quite like Superdecimary, too. Decume - well, it's definitely larger! I was going for 'book turtle' here; not sure how well it came off.
Still, I had fun.
hS
I agree that Nuima and Superdecimary are better than Decume, but mainly because Decume is just harder to get across. Overall, I think you did an excellent job. I like the red for the book covers, and the shape progression through the evolutionary line is nice, as well.
Well done.
-Phobos
I think you'd have that as basically an overturned book, with folded/rolled pages making the legs. I've actually made my version of Nuima in actual reality, sort of, and to get it to look right you'd really need to rip the pages partially away from the spine.
I can see Decume as a... I guess more turtle than crab, with a faceted shell, and one book open at the front to make the face. Then Superdecimary - well, I think that comes down to how well the art would work. I'm pretty sure I couldn't pull off a biped made of books without it looking stupid, but I agree that it would look good if someone could. The staff... probably depends, again, how it's done.
(My designs tend to involve unconnected body parts. That's because I find them easier to draw - wildly so. ;))
hS
Would you like drawings of these "Pokemon"? Because I could do that.
I think I just made Silmaglor into a cute fox thingy with one paw on fire. Not sure how this happened. If you have any preferences appearance-wise for the others, tell me now. Silmaglor can be changed if you desire.
What is this thing my hand had made.
I'm fine with a fox theme throughout. My only real note is that Dafstance has long hair (or 'hair') playing the role of Luthien's nightcloak - hence the bizarre cone thing.
hS
I'm gonna have to pass on the Pokemon part, though, as the Pokemon franchise and I have been through a rather nasty falling out. Lots of yelling and throwing of things (Pokeballs, mostly) and squinting at teeny tiny screens.
But ship names? Yeah, I can try my hand at a few of those. I'll start off simple, with my own characters. Since some of them don't really portmanteau together all that well, the following list will be a combination of mash-up couple names and descriptors. First off, the partnership... uh, ships.
Gremlin/Xericka - Grexicka, Xemlin, Dark Sparks
Laura/Danny - Lanny, Darla
Laura/James - Jarla, Southern Comfort
Rachel/Cornelius - Ralius, AUspicous, AUsome
And, as a bonus:
Laura/Danny/Rachel - Darlachel, Mentorshipping
Finally (for now), a suggestion for Dafydd/Constance: OBMF (One Big Mad Family).
PC
Grexicka
Electric/Dark
Dark Sparks Pokemon
As it gallops, it kicks up sparks that take on a life of their own. Its rear legs are made of pure lightning.
Xemlin
Electric/Dark
Night Storm Pokemon
It is rarely seen, as it carries a darkness about it. People say it is the source of the strange lights sometimes seen during thunderstorms.
I'm... not really sure why Xemlin has turned into a fish. Maybe that's why it cloaks itself in darkness?
(And yes, I am aware that there is technically already an electric horse Pokemon. Hopefully these two are different enough...)
hS
The design for Grexicka put me in mind of the D&D nightmare creature, only with lightning as opposed to flames. I approve of such a concept.
As for Xemlin, I assumed (in the short moments after I had seen the drawing but before I read the bit underneath it) that what I was looking at was the darkness it carried around. I thought that the creature itself was more like a sentient foo fighter or will-o-the-wisp hiding in a eel-shaped cloak of darkness
Either way, pretty cool concepts. While I might not be a Pokemaniac anymore, I could see these as interesting critters from that universe.
Bltzle is a zebra that absorbs and discharges electrical energy, and evolves into a larger version that does so more quickly and efficiently. Grexicka is a horse phantom made of darkness and sparks, and evolves into a titanic sky-eel that shoots lightning from its eyes. I think they're different enough.
I'm imagining that Xemlin looks a lot like the a flying version of the gulper eel, just because the idea of that thing also being capable of swallowing a small plane whole is just too incredible to dismiss.
Of course, they'd probably live in systems of strong and turbulent weather, being thunderstorm-based creatures and all, so pilots would probably stay away from a potential Xemlin den with or without the threat of being Megasharked, but I'm having too much fun with the idea to let basic logic get in its way.
This is what happens when I type while excited. I forget to proof-read, and article adjectives just start showing up next to each other in the final post. They're like coat hangers in a crowded closet, if coat hangers were spawned from not paying attention instead of... whatever it is that people say causes coat hangers to multiply. I'm not the best with similes.
I really like 'Xemlin' for some reason. And, for that matter, OBMF - though I think it might have a wider application than just Daf/Con. Given the state of my cast list, I think virtually everyone is part of the OBMF.
