We boarders tend to use creative curses too. I think I've invented "Fëanor on a barbecue".

Swearing in the PPC. by

With Winfrey, I tend to use a very Asimov-inspired (Stars! Galaxy!) swear set (I am aware that in her home canon, people do not swear like this and in English translation it's more like 'Geez`, but I can wiggle away here - perhaps she speaks a regional dialect). With Noman, he's usually cut off before he can complete the swear.
Winfrey: "SWEET GALAXY, WHAT IS THAT!?"
Noman: "SON OF A-" [BEEEEEEEEP]
The question is: how does your character's backstory and home continuum play into things?

I mean, my point about not using real-life people still stands, but I'm still puzzling out the logistics of this mission, so I am in sore need of fact-checking. Would you perchance like to help me iron it out? I can't ask you for beta work on this story because I'm aware that it requires a lot of spoons and spare time that not all of us have, but a quick historical vibe check would be a huge help to me. I could send you an email or a message wherever you'd like me to, describing the basic premise for this story (without spoiling the ending or the finer details).

Saying anything more about the outcome of a Rome vs. Dreopis war would be a spoiler for... pretty much the entire plot of this story, but the battle that this chapter mentions went very badly for both sides.

So whoever it was I pasted in there would be, at least on paper, the person tasking Concordia to the voyage. I have no idea who the governer was, or even when we are (except that we must be post-Boudicca, if the capital is Londinium!).

As I said, I'm not an expert on... pretty much any topic I touch on in the story, so you're helping me a lot with each tiny detail you add to this. The majority of the plot takes place in either Dreopis or in Roman land territories, so I'm skipping the voyage, but it's very useful to actually have an idea of smaller details like a potential route that I can build on. I think I will change the port to Lemanis, as you suggested. And I am aware that an actual person with actual historical records to his name governed Britannia at the time, but the Governor will have a pretty prominent part in this story, and I don't trust myself to portray real-life historical figures accurately, so I'll keep the timeline vague and slap on an 'Alternate History' tag on AO3 to cover my behind. :D

A sea battle in the North Atlantic? Oof. That sounds like a genuine Roman nightmare.
I feel like it had been a long time since the Romans had to face anyone with a fleet. They controlled the Med, the landings in Britannia were only opposed on land, and the rest of the frontier was land.

Have you considered Lemanis? by

I've pulled out my Roman Britain Map, and the road from Londinium to Portus Lemanis (modern Lympne) is basically the same length as the road to Rutupiae. It's better sited for a run west, and was actually built by the navy. Not as cool a name though.
(Bonus fact: if we happen to be in first third of the second century, Lympne is the site of an altar inscription showing that Lucius Aufidius Pantera was the prefect of the Classis Britannia at that time.)
Whichever way you go, I'd probably stop over on the first night at Vectis or Portus Ardaoni - ie, the Isle of Wight or the port sheltered by it. No point night sailing if you can avoid it. You might even get your second night at Isca Dumnoniorum (Exeter) ; apparently the river was navigable. Then you can run the Cornish coast in daylight and head west from there.
(Or you could hop over to Gaul and sail the northern coast instead, but I don't have a map of that one. :D)

Derik reread the message several times, unable to fully absorb its meaning in one go. It sank in bit by bit: The Sues were gone. All of them, and all their works, too. That explained the portal's failure to open: the generator couldn't target a fic that no longer existed.
But what about Gall and Fellrazer? "Disappearances," the message said; they weren't the only ones. But Gall wasn't a Sue, not even a reformed one; she'd been the bully to her fic's Sue.
"Beings," the message had mentioned "beings," too, "born of their direct influence." Did that mean anyone who had been a character in a Suefic? But that couldn't be right, because that would include himself, and he was still here. Maybe—he hardly dared hope—maybe that meant he really had had a life before Alanna? He could remember it in snatches, every piece falling into place as though it had always been there, and he desperately wanted to believe it was real. All the Phantom nonsense that mapped onto him, that he could chalk up to Suvian meddling.
Unless his fears had been correct all along, and his memories were fabrications his mind had spun from the suggestions of the Reality Room. Unlike his partner, he'd blundered his way into one post-recruitment. Could it have scrubbed him so thoroughly clean of Alanna's touch that he had managed to duck whatever was sweeping Headquarters?
He didn't know what to think. This was too much. Gall gone, Sues gone, everyone else born of Suvian influence gone... How many agents was that? How many people did he even know who weren't from a badfic?
Well, Thoth, for one. At least, as far as he knew. Surely his friend would have mentioned it by now; they'd spoken of origins often enough. Yes, Thoth would be all right. He must be.
And Su wasn't from a fic at all—oh, but Diocletian was a former Sue, wasn't she? And Ithalond and Mithiriel came from one of the most notorious Suefics of all. Their daughter Alwaen had been born in Headquarters, though. Was she safe?
What about Gadrik?
The thought of his own three-year-old son sent Derik into a panic he couldn't stop, and his shame at not having thought of him immediately added fuel to the fire. Gadrik was in the Nursery, where he was supposed to be safe, but there was no guarantee of that anymore. Derik had to go see him, right now.
His heart just about stopped when he tugged on the door and couldn't open it, but then he remembered the Tiger Lily's message had said they'd locked the doors, to keep people from getting in the way of security's investigations. Well, that was fine and dandy for them. The DIA had their job to do, Derik had his.
And he had a sledgehammer.
(( Next time, the Nursery! Lily, if you want C&E to get there first, that's fine with me. Otherwise, if you don't mind waiting a bit longer, I have a bit I can do with Derik before they show up when I next get a chance. Whichever!
(( For the record (mostly mine), Ithalond and Mithiriel having a kid is something Tungsten Monk intended to happen, but nothing has been written about that yet. Derik's train of thought made me think of her, and nothing would do but I had to come up with a name. Two, actually. Derik calls her by her father-name, Alwaen, which means "unstained" and is pronounced all-wine. Seems like the kind of thing Ithalond would both see in and wish for his daughter. Her mother-name is Muichiril, "Lady of Cats," and is pronounced mwee-kiril. She is destined to take up a Hermione-like crusade against the Cats Are Evil trope and care for all the felines of HQ. ^_^ Many thanks for hS for helping me with the Sindarin and giving me the idea for her future, should this become canon.

I know, I should probably write proper chapters instead of snippets, but I'm still figuring out the structure for this story, so bear with me.
Anyway, this is where things turn a bit more Dramatique, as the Centurion prepares to land on the Dreopian shore with her troop. Warning for a mention of BL9 (destructive fire). You can read the chapter here, and if you enjoy the story so far, do let me know what you think! ^_^

Link for convenience. I ended up making a few tweaks as I went along, such as adding Jay and Acacia's original guidance for spin-off writers with a reference link. I'd hate for that bit of history to be lost. Let me know if everything looks okay.
The Permission FAQ is now here, and will also need to be edited. But not by me right now. Maybe later! Suggestions are absolutely welcome in the meantime.

Which mostly boils down to “flibbergibbit”, “curses!”, [profanity], and “Canon!” So stuff like “Oh, flibbergibbit!” “Curses!” “You [profanity]ing piece of [profanity] and “Thank Canon for that!”
I think you can see what words they’re euphemisms for. ;)
No reason “Smauging” is bad, though.
