So, a friend of mine recommended this webcomic, Lore Olympus, and I have absolutely fallen in love with it. I don’t usually like webcomics, for reference, so for me to find one I like is rare. But this one is great! It has squee worthy moments, and funny moments, and moments where I want to punch certain characters (ahem-Apollo-ahem), and it’s just great!

Hey, everyone! The artist formerly known as Mirage Fontane here. I just wanted to let y'all know that I'll be going by Oculus from now on in the PPC. 'Mirage Fontane' is a very old nickname of mine, and I felt it was high time to retire it. I'll change it on the Wiki too when I can.
Cheers!

Does this mean we need to come up with new euphemisms? by
on 2021-02-23 08:56:51 UTC
Reply
Only, because "new" was the problem here, they need to sound really old.
How about "starboard"? In its original sense, it means "steering board" - ie, rudder. It's a word nobody uses as a concrete noun any more, so using it that way will immediately make you look old-fashioned. Plus, it lends itself to some great "port and starboard" gags.
Failing that, how about animals? I've got a NaNo which jokes about how incredibly crude the name of Mount Wolf is, because "wolf" is just such a euphemism. Lots of possibilities for pouncing, leaping, howling at the moon...
The key, of course, is to make them so oblique that nobody would understand what they meant without some heavy-duty context. Make it sound like it could have gotten through Victorian prudery by being misinterpreted as a charming folk-tale - "The Sailor Comes Home" or "The Wolf in his Den". Imagine a bunch of Yorkshire farmers sitting around guffawing about the utter filth being printed in the Good Child's Book of Pretty Fairies. That's how you find the really good euphemisms.
(Internet points to anyone who writes one of those charming folk-tales. ^_~ And possibly a quick illustration of just how charmingly innocent it all is.)

There is/was an event on Dragon Cave (Valentine's day event) where one dragon had this exact problem.
Link to story for citation's sake (it won't work if you're not on Dragcave)

Yes, you read that right, and you can see it here.
Anyone who doesn't feel like clicking the link, it's just a brief clip showing shoppers in Diagon Alley before the camera cranes down to see the window of Flourish and Blotts. Inside is a book cover depicting Gilderoy Lockhart in a straightjacket.
I grew up learning to read on these books. I've won competitions, theorised, written novels-length fanfictions for the series. And I had no idea this existed until now.
Anyway, that's my mind blown enough for today. I'm going to go sit in a corner now.

Also the New Caledonia wiki page. Apparently Fandom takes issue with tinyurl now, so I also changed the myminicity links. Which is weird, because I'm pretty sure the reason we used tinyurls for them is that Wikia had flagged myminicity. {= /
Ah well, done now.

... is now on the new Shipfest archive. I've formally adopted the 'five fics into the Shipfest, along with "Huinesoron and Quelleharmiel"; I think they were actually written before the shipping list, but they clearly fit the concept (and Bjam & BiD were working on both, so the boundary is blurry anyway).
I'll dig out Odder Day and Oddest Day and add them in; according to the Wiki, they'll probably be the only fics for their respective years (likely '05 and '06).

- Authors are now all at http://fanficverse.neocities.org/Authors/[Name].html. Author1 is JayBird, the other two you can see who they are.
- Stories all have the same story ID, but are split into the two archives: FFL 'Story[x].htm' addresses are now at http://fanficverse.neocities.org/FFL/Story[X].htm, while FfW 'Story[x]-[y].htm' are at http://fanficverse.neocities.org/FfW/Story[x]-[y].htm.
- Page1, Page2, and Page3 were the three pages of the FFL category; they're now merged into http://fanficverse.neocities.org/FFL/index.html.
- Similarly, the FfW index and 'PPCIndex' are both at http://fanficverse.neocities.org/FFL/index.html.
- Finally, the basic link can probably point straight at http://fanficverse.neocities.org.
Thanks for the image! I'll get her page fixed up today. :)

... Oh, bother, I had that Agent Aurora image hosted in a Photobucket account that no longer exists. Lemme see... Aha! I thought I'd put it somewhere else. I think you can download it, or you can just get the image address and use it as is. I've done that with some of the images I use on my own website; dA doesn't seem to mind.
I gotta say, that old Fanfiction.net theme makes me smile. {= )
Are all the story IDs and stuff the same? If so, it shouldn't be any trouble updating links (unless any are broken, in which case I'll let you know).

In which the impostor protagonist is groped and… uhh… in the very first chapter, and bad slash ensues repeatedly. Other than that, it's just all-around unfunny, boring and unsexy, with bland narration and bad dialogues. Here's a sample (NSFW):
Black continued to move making me 10x more sensitive. My moans were unbelievably hot, I couldn't believe my voice was capable of this. As I had my head against the wall Black took the advantage and decided to give me a hickey, it surprisingly felt good and gave me more than 5.

Yes! You
heardread right! I've finally finished something, edited it, and am putting it up! What an interesting year it's been, writing-wise.And this is not just any story, friends
Romans, countrymen, no! Indeed not! This is a Ten(ish) Years Hence interlude, and it has everything! A helping of fluff! A touch of angst! An appearance from a character who first showed up in 2015 (okay, 2017 for publication date) and has barely been mentioned since! New Caledonia! Puns!Okay, one pun. And I didn't come up with it. It's great, though.
Anyway, fanfare aside: I have finally finished editing this, and am delighted to be able to share it with all of you. It's not particularly heavy, for all it does contain a serious conversation; if anything, it's fluffy. You'll see.
At any rate: first written in late 2018, it's finally here! It's...
"Ten(ish) Years Hence - A Legendary Legacy"
Summary: Cai Bonnefoy goes to New Cal with his father and finally gets the chance to ask some important questions about their history. Set roughly 2027.
(For context: Cai was rescued from a Legendary Badfic in January 2019, and this was written before "Crossing the Coffee Table" was really anything more than a vague idea, as far as I remember. Ultimately, I decided to keep that element as it was; more on that in the ending a/n, but for now, well, this is a bit AU from the outset. That's alright, though. No one's personality is radically different, or anything. Their lives are just a little bit richer in what's since replaced this as canon.)
As ever, I'd love to know what you think! I can't promise to be the best at responding, especially this week, but every comment is (as always, really) appreciated.
~Z, who can now put a slightly intimidating number of things up on the wiki, can't she. Oh dear. What a horrible prospect ;)

I think I'm comfortable now saying Permission denied for the moment - but only for the moment! Ki no Shirayuki, take a month or two, think about what's been said in this thread, and try to think about what you've enjoyed when reading PPC missions! That's always a good foundation to work from when adding to a shared universe. Try writing a few scenes for the drawer just to get your hand in, see what works and what gets old really fast. Then ask again in a couple of months - we'll still be here, never fear. :)

I dunno, Led Zep not working on the harp is debatable. by

For instance, "Immigrant Song" on duet harps is haunting and gorgeous, IMO. It's different, but does that mean it doesn't work? {= )
There's about a million harp covers of "Stairway to Heaven," too, as it turns out.
But, actually, I agree with pretty much everything else you said there. It doesn't work in any situation for the agents to just stand there and go "this is bad!", for starters. A mission at its best shows why it's bad or how it's absurd if you stop and think for a few seconds. The agents' emotional/visceral response and snark can be an important part of that, but only if you take it a step beyond the surface-level "ew!" or "wrong!" or whatever. That certainly goes for squicky fic as much as anything else. In that case, you also don't want to revel in the squick and reproduce all the nasty badfic quotes you can cram in, because yeah, that's obvious, and after a certain point it's redundant, and if that's all you do, it's not creative or fun to read. Trojie and Pads knew this, and they were really good at using the agents' responses to stuff to get what was happening across without quoting it verbatim, and being entertaining while they were at it.
Additionally, I think there's an opportunity to comment on the subtle social wrongness that might lead to the horrible attitudes that tend to show up in godawful smut and the like. There's a lot of horrible that society at large does not yet recognize as horrible, and I think we've cultivated a community that can speak to that better than most. As Mary Sues aren't feminist, so bad slash is often homophobic, and more.
So that's why I say have at it. But yeah, the stuff that gives a PPCer something to work with creatively and entertainingly is always going to be a better choice, regardless of subject material. {= )

I don't know where I've acquired my ability to find the weirdest of the worst, but as long as fun things like this mission or the Raze sporking come out of it, I'm very glad to share the bad with you and the others.
