Because it's been pointed out by my lovely wife that some of the references might be a bit obscure...

So, first off: I'm riffing off my Celebrian mission here (which may or may not be SFW; probably not). Kelley Brian is the title character, with long silver hair. The Goblin is the famous Goblin King (not Jareth! I promise!), and Manet is... well, Manet. There's a half-Orc named Manet in C_l_br__n, I have no idea why. One-Hand Iggy Lund is Ithalond, the elf whose hands got cut off; he's working with the Protectors because we recruited him on the mission. El Ron of Dale's Ravine is Elrond of Rivendell, and the High Pass is... the High Pass, where Goblin-Town is found.

(Any speculation as to why the Goblin amends 'kings' to 'kings and queens' is entirely on the reader.)

My knowledge of the American West is fairly heavily biased towards Utah and the Latter-day Saints, so I've deliberately made use of that. The history is that in 1844, the Mormon founder Joseph Smith ('Holy Joe' here) was shot by a mob while in prison in Illinois; Brigham Young ('Brother Brigham') was his main successor, and led the Mormons west to Utah. For a while, they attempted to found a state named Deseret (a word from LDS scripture meaning 'honeybee', if you're curious), but that... didn't exactly take.

Despite being a religious group, they weren't exactly shy about using guns, so I can easily imagine them meddling with bandits on the Oregon Trail passing north of Utah. Of course, given their polygamous doctrines (Brigham in particular had like 50 wives), they would up in conflict with the US government; that's the 'their own troubles'.

The Mormon missionary program spread far and wide, converting people across America and beyond. Moderately famously, they had a whole bunch of Welsh converts, who moved to Utah and founded the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. That's Taff's backstory; he gets it because Dafydd spent time in Wales before his recruitment. (He also has a bow, because Dafydd; where he got it I don't know. The beard is just historical accuracy at play.)

The story pretty much covers the ending of the C_l_br__n mission, played somewhat loosely. The key connection is the very end: rather that Dafydd blowing everything up with an unstable magic ring, we get Taff blowing everyone up with TNT. Like I said - I'm sure he'll be fine...(!)
