But the thing WE call pizza: a very specific kind of dough, with a specific style of marinara spread over it (you can't just use gravy, it's the wrong consistency), topped with sausage, or onion, or clams, or eggplant, or garlic, or thinly-sliced tomatoes and basil, or any of the above, then covered in mozzarella and baked until done... most certainly did not.
Or at least, it was modified so heavily by the Italian-American community in New Haven that "pizza" as we mean it here is a distinct food from its distant ancestor.
But back to your original gripe - Pizza Hut bears as much resemblance to pizza, as I knew it growing up, as a can of Dole's pineapple does to the original pineapple fruits. And Chicago doesn't count. That much, at least, we can agree on.
